The Federal Government yesterday reiterated its commitment to implement the payment of N18, 000 per month for all civil servants as recommendations by the Belgore’s Committee on the National Minimum wage.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Mallam Mahmud Yayale Ahmed disclosed this yesterday in Abuja while receiving the report of the committee headed by Chief Justice Alfa Modibbo Belgore.

Mallam Ahmed noted that Nigeria is making “history in terms of our ability to demonstrate commitment to the-course of the Nigerian workers and in a more dignified way”

He emphasized that “Nigeria is a country that will always make a difference if collective responsibilities such as this, is sincerely applied in the management of public affairs”.

According to him, “it is his conviction that no matter the amount approved by Government as national Minimum Wage that will improve the system per se, but the realisation of everybody that sincerity must be applied.

He said that he speaks with a deep sense of humility on the kind of recommendation given by the group of Nigerians that formed this Committee .

He emphasised that workers’ condition must change and change must come through collective efforts of the Government, the employer and the labour.
Speaking at the presentation, the Chairman of the Committee, Chief Justice Belgore stated that the Committee met severally and consulted widely.

“Several stakeholders including experts, relevant public sector institutions, professional bodies, State Governments, the organized labour, the organized private sector as well as the informal sector were involved”, he noted.

He said, the Committee also studied relevant laws, relevant ILO Conventions, Recommendations and Documents, and considered the National Minimum Wage of N50,000 per month demanded by labour and the N30,000 per month proposed as the national minimum wage by the National Assembly in the context of the dynamics of the national economy.
