Fellow Nigerians,

The 32nd President of the United States was Frank D. Roosevelt. D for Delano. He served four terms. Unprecedented. Never since. 1933-1945. The fourth term was truncated by his passing. That is, he died.

This man presided over the US government during two great trials.

THE FIRST was the Great Depression, a worldwide economic collapse (not a recession. A depression. A depression is worse than a recession. And this one was GREAT).

When Roosevelt took office from Goodluck Jonathan..sorry, er...from Herbert Hoover in 1933, the US was at the nadir (lowest point) of its economic history in all 157 years of its existence as an independent nation.

For the common man, nothing was working. Absolutely nothing.

Millions were living in extreme poverty. At least two million people were homeless, unemployment rate was 25%, agriculture and industry had failed, and banks had closed down in 32 of 48 states. The remainder had very long queues.

IN HIS FIRST 100 DAYS, even though there was nothing to build on or draw from; President Roosevelt proposed a sweeping (broom yeah? Broom, not umbrella) economic reform, calling it the "New Deal." He formed a "Brain Trust" of economic advisors who designed agencies which supported farm prices, employed young men, insured bank deposits, regulated the stock market, subsidized mortgages, and provided relief to the unemployed.

With unflappable self confidence, dogged optimism, and bold experimentation, Roosevelt's administration floated initiative after initiative that kept the nation afloat upon the extremely turbulent economic waters.

In 3 years (what did I say? 3 YEARS), things improved, the GDP went up by 34%, and unemployment rate fell to 14%. By 1945, it was less than 2%.

THE SECOND TRIAL was the greatest conflict in recent human history, World War II.

America had remained semi-neutral, only indirectly backing the Allied forces against the Axis powers of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperialist Japan.

Pearl Harbour changed all that.

Japan bombed America's Naval Base off the coast of Hawaii on December 7, 1941 with 2403 casualties. FDR declared war on Boko Haram....I mean....on Japan the next morning. (The actual video of this speech is available on YouTube. You will see Lai Mohammed there....oh no, you won't).

A movie of the same title (Pearl Harbour, 2001) has this scene where Roosevelt is talking to his military chiefs and advisers on the need to respond swiftly and clearly, and they are not buying it... they're like "it can't be done"

His approach seemed implausible, impracticable, improbable, maybe impossible.

FDR THEN PROCEEDS to stand up physically. This man had had polio for 20 years earlier and had since then been paralysed from the waist down. His disability was rigorously kept away from public knowledge and he went on medical leave abroad 3 times, no 4 times....sorry...I keep mixing things up. He....but you get the point. He wasn't perfectly healthy, and didn't want Nigerians to know exactly what was wrong. I mean, Americans...Americans. There was no Nigeria then.

(He had on steel braces under his clothes that enabled him to stand up and walk a few steps. He exercised his upper body regularly (swimming) to help him do this. He even had his car modified with hand controls so that he could drive without the use of his feet)

When he stood up in that meeting, mustering strength from his upper body....

Everyone got the message.

That particular scene may well be one of the several fictional adaptations of what actually transpired; but it generally depicts the kind of the spirit of leadership, that man had. Words that followed his getting up summarized the effort.

"Do not tell me it can't be done".

THIS IS A WORD to those who say "PDP has ruined this country for 16 years. Don't expect APC to change it in 3 years"

Even if one does not consider the fact that APC is simply PDP reloaded, and PDP is APC original, that is one of the most unlearned statements ever spoken. Don't just repeat things you hear

Frank Delano Roosevelt's passing shocked the nation to its roots. They mourned for days. He is regarded as one of the three greatest presidents of the US, the other two being George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln.

He was NOT a perfect man, or even a perfect leader -he made his own mistakes- but he contributed his bit to his country, and did so quite commendably.

He was a propeller of CHANGE
An example of INTEGRITY,
And a steward of PROGRESS.

And the hope is that we won't have to wait 157 years to get there. That is; to have leaders like this.

Thank you for reading.

Good morning.

Truth be told, if Buhari cannot enshrine his anti-corruption mantra or the value of human life in the Nigerian Police after 3yrs, he can never do so if given 50yrs.

The old man simply doesn't have it in him. You cannot give what you do not have. He was dead to all the complaints against the MOPOL, until Osinbajo seized the initiative in his absence, to act like someone who is not deaf to the cries of his own countrymen.

When we were campaigning for him based on the lofty tales of his past regime with Idiagbon, many had thought he was the Messiah. He might not be a greedy thief like Atiku or Tinubu, or a blessed ATM like the irresponsible Jonathan, but he certainly has no wherewithal to move Nigeria at the speed it needs to move even if he has the right coordinates.

Some of the questions I always ask myself is, will I ever know a Nigeria where a citizen truly has rights?

Will the federal government ever prosecute anyone who has participated in a riot that took many lives like we have been experiencing since the 1980s?

Would the law authorities ever display independence and go after anyone who has been indicted of a crime, without first visiting the President to get approval to proceed?

Will uninterrupted power supply and local refining of crude to meet total national demand ever be a national reality?

Not once has a Nigerian president addressed the public and denounced jungle justice meted out to suspects by the mob, tacitly allowing the breakdown of the law and devaluation of human life.

I am certain that Buhari will reduce theft in government, but also certain that he will not change the structures that continuously militate against the growth and development of Nigeria. He is even clueless and has surrounded himself with people who do not think anything is wrong with Nigeria, while himself is determined to obstruct anyone who provides a solution that is at dissonance with his tribal biases.

Lastly, none of the notable politicians care about the masses. They are the citizens, while we are the victims of Nigeria. That is why if given the chance, I will vote Oby Ezekwesili or Sowore ahead of the useless array of failures we choose to impose on ourselves. Only these 2 mentioned candidates have ever put themselves in the position of the Nigerian "victims", even when they could rather hobnob in the circle of privileged "citizens".

I warn you Nigerians. Only those 2 candidates have any fight in them to make our lives more meaningful.

The time is now!

Seize it or join the queue of refugees who daily resume at foreign embassies, feeling entitled to an escape without any shame that they could not simply reproduce a template society they want to go and benefit abroad.

The man Buhari had over 30 years to change and work on his mentality but, unfortunate he never did so how can 4 years change him? The divide and rule-civil war mentality is still with the man till this moment and that have affect the progress and unity of the country in general.

for you to compare buhari to FDR shows how much you disregard that great man.you really don't know anything about FDR and the great depression
now to help you compare, when FDR took over from Hoover they are already in great depression but your oga Buhari took over from his predecessor and brought the depression himself. we are now looking for our FDR to save us from him

You still had to put Jonathan's name to tell us u are a zombified buharist. undecided
Modified, so this article is about PDP APC.
But the error here is comparing what FDR did to what pmb is doing. I don't know when all these nonsense comparison by BMC will stop. Buharist cannot be compared to anyone, no leader, ruler or politician can make things worse like buhari. He is on his own constructed last of maladministration. Which would be destroyed come 2019.
