Right now as much as I like Buhari, unfortunately this cannot happen. The landing cost of 1 litre of PMS 145+53= N198. This is the amount of subsidy being paid. Since we do not have functional refineries, we are subject to the price fluctuations of the crude oil price. Thus reducing the cost to N95 a litre would mean an increase in the amount government is spending as unappropriated subsidy which would not be reasonable because of dwindling profit margin from the sale of crude oil and importation of PMS. This is why previous governments since Obasanjo who kept paying for TAM at the refineries without ensuring that we had them functioning should be held accountable for their mismanagement and maladministration while the culprits should be jailed for 100 years while their assets are seized and sold to recover our money. It would hit the government harder and I don't think this is possible. In 15 months or thereabout Dangote's refinery would be operational and the South western part of Nigeria would experience its indirect effect through expanding economic activities, while the price of petrol will begin to fall. So it doesn't matter who becomes President by 2020, the cost of PMS will come down. By the way Tony Elumelu former UBA chairman is set to lead a consortium to invest $2.5bn in an oil lease investment in Nigeria, and he has said that Nigeria's economic outlook is bright or else no foreign investor will be thinking of sinking such money into Nigeria. |
