No fewer than three million bottles of cough syrup with codeine were being consumed in Kano and Jigawa states before the recent ban on cough syrup containing codeine, the national chairman and chief executive officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Col. Muhammad Mustapha, (Retd), has stated.
Speaking on the occasion of destroying 6.21 tonnes of illicit drugs in Dutse, he said about 253 kilogrammes of tramol were intercepted at the Maigatari border.
“The symbolic importance of this event is to ensure that all seized drugs are permanently put out of circulation and stopped from doing any further harm to society.
“It all so afford stakeholders the opportunity to witness that once drugs are seized, they are not spared, just as it sends a strong signal to drug merchants that NDLEA will continue to ruin their illicit drug investments, the agency boss stated
Also speaking at the event, the Jigawa Commandant of the (NDLEA), Josephine Ruth, vowed to curtail the supply of and demand for illicit narcotic substances with the support of Jgawa State government and sister agencies in the state.
She said that the agency arrested 3,608 suspects and seized 8.26 tonnes of various types of exhibits.
According to her, “The event is evidence of our compliance with the order of the presiding judge of the Federal High Court, Dutse, to destroy all forfeited drug exhibits by public burning them.”
