As at 5 pm Nigerian time on Monday, October 29, 2018, residents who ply the Karu-Nyanya-Mararaba link road, were seen still stranded along the erstwhile busy highway as Shia Muslims had blocked the road in a protest. Although unarmed, the group made it impossible for commuters to move beyond the Kugbo junction, just before Karu bridge.

The military and the Police were seen trying to clear the road so as to make it possible for commuters to get home, through the sporadic firing of weapons. The action allegedly has led to the deaths of several Shia Muslims.

According to eyewitnesses, who spoke to Lingo Africa, the military was, allegedly evacuating some corpses with their vehicles, after shooting at them, due to the obstruction and engaging the military in a fight using stones.

Also, there were few elders among the protesters, who were mostly young people, comprising of men and women (some with children).

Some Nigerians have outrightly condemned the action of the Shia Muslims who they believe to be dangerous despite not carrying any weapons while protesting. Others believe the group to be well within their rights to protest peacefully.

They were marching in A VERY orderly manner in a part of the lane going into Abuja until police and army attacked them.

Nigerians can be foolish. How can the blocking of roads and the throwing of stones warrant the shooting and Killing of people? In which civilised country do the authorities use live ammunition as a traffic control tool?
