What is uterine fibroid? Uterine fibroids also known as uterine leiomyomas and uterine myomas are one of the most occuring tumors of the female reproductive system. What are the symptoms? Most people experience no symptoms, while other women experience severe or disruptive symptoms. Symptoms of uterine fibriod may include: Frequent urination Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods lower backache Severe pain during sexual intercourse Discomfort in the lower abdomen, especially in the case of large fibriods Constipation Labor problems Fertility problems Risk factors of uterine fibriods Women approaching menopause Women who are obese and of Adrican-American heritage Research has also shown that women who have had two liveborn children have one-half the risk of developing uterine fibriod compared to women who have had no children. Causes of uterine fibriods There are no clear explanation on the causes of fibriods, although it is believed each tumor develops from an aberrant muscle cell, which appear to develop rapidly when estrogen levels are higher. Research also have it that red meat, alcohol, and caffiene consumption tends to increase the risk of fibriods. Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of fibriods. Genetic or hereditary factors are thought to impact the development of fibroids. Treatment of uterine fibriods Treatment can take the form of medication or surgical operation. These includes: Conservative surgical therapy This procedure involves the removal of the fibriods, but leaving the uterus intact to enable future pregnancy. This procedure can also be called a "myomectomy". Anti-hormonal agents The application of certain drugs opposes estrogen and are effective in treating fibriods. Anti-progestins, which can block the action of progesterone can also be used. Hysterectomy It involves the surgical removal of the entire uterus. Anti-inflammatory painkillers This type of drug is suitable and effective for women who often complains about occasional pains. Herbal Cure for Fibroids Green Tea Enjoying a cup of green tea can help reduce the risk of uterine fibriods. According to research green tea are madeup of chemical compounds that distort the growth of fibriod cells. Drink a cup of green tea twice/thrice daily for a few months until you see changes. Apple Cider Vinegar Obviously does not belong to any class of herbs, but can help reduce fibroid symptoms and also helps remove toxins from the body. Weight gain has been linked with fibroid development and hormone imbalances, so weight loss by the apple cider vinegar is believed to shrink fibroids too.
