The Federal Government, has asked the relevant security agencies in Nigerian ports to be on the look out as a Dutch vessel M.V Nashville with registration number UE/SU4635950 laden with toxic cargo has for the second time been intercepted and turned back while trying to berth at the Ivorian Port of Abidjan.

A source at the National Environmental Standards Regulatory and Enforcement Agency (NESREA) ,who spoke to THISDAY, said the toxic bearing ship had earlier been turned back while attempting to berth at the Tin Can Island Port in Apapa, Lagos by a combined team of port officials comprising the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Maritime Administration and safety Agency, (NIMASA), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigeria Police, Nigeria Customs Service, State Security Service (SSS), Port Health and NESREA.
It said the vessel carrying 70 storage (lead) batteries classified as Bassel Code 1180, broken television sets and other hazardous e-waste was intercepted and turned back at the Nigerian Port on April 15 following a tip-of from the Dutch environmental watchdog VROM Inspectorate.

The NESREA source told THISDAY yesterday that the same ship was tracked down by the Ivorian Maritime Authorities while trying to manoeuvre its way into the Ivorian Port to discharge its deadly contents in total disregard for the Basel Convention before it was discovered and quickly turned back.
He said the continued hovering of the ship on West African coastline has necessitated the Federal Government's decision to put security at the ports on alert to prevent any attempt by the ship to make a detour to the Nigerian waters.

The Dutch authorities had warned Nigeria that the e-waste carried by the cargo ship is capable of emitting dangerous radioactive waves, which could penetrate the human skin and cause cancer and leukemia, among other deadly diseases

So sad that Nigeria can defined this way  - but it so true.

The story makes no sense.

So a ship known to be a Dutch ship is sailing in water for some time now, right? How is it being fuelled? Most importantly why are the Dutch not been held responsible for this? It is a bit odd that the Dutch will leave their own ship in the waters, and then warn others about its cargo content?

Instead of raising security at the port, how about tracking the damn ship before it gets to the ports ALL THE TIME? How about kicking out the Dutch ambassador or something to force a political move quickly?

I call it BS.

the netherlands is a democracy. if one part of a democracy is doing something, another part is against it, so this is why a dutch watch dog is warning nigeria.

this story happens all the time, europe uses africa as a toxic and nuclear dumping ground and we praise them for being humane and civilized.

The Authorities as used in this context refers to those who are in charge of the country. I am sure they won't show a disunited front.

Surely, if the ship was laced with so called e.waste (Which are going to used tv and other junks I think) why didn't this "democracy of government" you speak of stopped it from leaving their own shores in the first place? You explanation is just not adding up.

I am aware few nations in the past have been used as dumping grounds. From the Koko waste saga of the 80s and the most recent one in a war-torn african nation and places like india etc.

This particular story is just not adding up is all am saying.

The people that want to dump the waste are not the dutch authorities. Its probably a private institution. When a company does something it doesn't mean that i represents the entire govt. of the country geez.

why wouldn't they show a disunited front? it's a democracy, that's what democracy is, everyone gets to speak, and this creates multiple view points.

go to the US congress and bring up the topic of Iraq.

they let it leave their waters cause they dont want ewaste in their waters, a very simple answer that you really didn't have to ask to reach had you thought about it.

This shi,t happens all the time, and great organistions like green peace have been trying to fight this horible injustice,  so at least we should give kudos to those that gave the tip off and the nigerian govt and custom service should follow up the case seriously, with the public media as a major watch dog to raise alarm in case that ship is allowed to berth by corrupt customs officials.

Is because they didn't bribe them that was why they turned the cargo back, had it been they do; forget it , we would have not heard about it.
Re: Fg Orders Security Alert Over Toxic Waste Shipment by Ikengawo: 6:24pm On Jul 21, 2010
you can just assume that or you can give the nigerian services its credit for saving the country.
