for your no 1 question it's better to check your market and see the type they prefer, maybe take a photo or two,so we can diagnosis the variety or you can divide the land and plant half of each and see the outcome.(2)from the practical experiments conducted in sacks, there's no possible way a cucumber planted on the soil direct will outperform those planted in sacks, because whatever nutrients that is applied in sack remains there, but nutrients applied on soil can easily leech into the soil after a heavy rain and go far down the root zone were it will be useless for the crops but the only drawback in sacks is the back bending, bone wrenching work of filling the sacks with soil.our cucumbers planted in sack are light years ahead of those planted on soil

my brother it is not normal, but the land we want to use has abnormal rats with sensors to detect freshly sown seed,if u don't do a nursery that u can cover in the night the rats will come and eat the whole seed at night, you will end up irrigating and waiting for the seed to germinate, and the rats will be somewhere picking their teeth and laughing at u.

I think it is physically impossible to harvest 17 bags from 490 crops at one harvest or do you mean the total cumulative harvest then it is fairly a good harvest,if 500 stands will give you 17 bags then a plot of 1500 crops will produce 51 bags which is not bad at all @ current price of #4k that will be #200k from one plot in roughly 3 months time,I am yet to see a practical crop that can pull such money from one plot in 3 months

Hello everyone,

I Did my first trial on cucumber farming and I Did my first harvest today glory be to God Almighty it was beyond my expectations.
When I wanted to start farming I googled about Cucumber farming and found this thread then I join nairaland, I read this thread from page 1 to page 92. I was eager to succeed against all odds and today it has started paying.
I planted 50g cu999 even though am in Lagos and people kept saying I won't sell n it's 2.5k or 3k for a bag. But from all I read here cu999 is much easier to cultivate, so I went on against all odds.
I did my first harvest today and got 12 bags and sold all today at 4k per bag. Glory be to Jesus.
I sincerely appreciate all the support I got from everyone one especially Mr Okoro Emeka and ideepaul, I always call Mr Okoro Emeka for assistance and he always came through. Thank u sir for what u do, may God reward u both with Long life in Jesus name Amen.

Congrats.

I have heard so much about tomatoes and I think it's time to give it a trial,a friend planted the Thai agro uc3034 variety and smiled happily to the bank,we are gearing up for tomatoes next year rainy season that when tomatoes are very costly.

I can't say it's good or bad! It's relative to your expenses...I believe you have a farm record, calculate how much you have spent on all farm related activities and commodities, the profit you made(if any) determines the profitability of such a venture. Even if you don't make profit, don't be discouraged, just reanalyze all your expenses and be creative in cost management, e.g
it doesn't make sense for you to spray a full knapsack of insecticides and fungicides on such quantity as half is more than enough(a full knapsack should cover between 600-750m² if done effectively)
Don't buy multiple chemicals/fertilizer for the same function as you are just wasting money ( a neighbor farm uses Di-grow red and agrovert 12-**46 for fruiting) that's just money wasted as he also uses npk-mg 12-12-17-2 granular fertilizer.
If your beds are done well, you may not need to pay for weeding in a cuke farm, since your farm is small. Just uproot every weed you see while walking/working in the farm, and once the cukes grow they will frustrate all weed inside the bed leaving only the paths
There are many other instances of people overspending/overbudgeting on simple things. Just spend smartly.

I have not laid my hands on that cultivar, how red/big is it? and what was the yield like sir?
Just study the growth pattern of this cultivar before you try it so you don't use the wrong staking methods o, Padma staking pattern won't work well with platinum o cheesy cheesy

Agricultural Farm Land Clearing/Preparation. The land shall be sufficiently level to permit the normal operation of farm equipment and the area must be ready for seed bed preparation. We deliver good service nationwide. We get the job done irrespective of the land location.
A very good agricultural land preparation influences the ability of the crop to emerge and produce a good, uniform crop stand. For successful farm land preparation, Contact us for your quality land clearing-09056508129, (08062288737 -available on whatsApp).

Thanks a bunch,

For land leasing it depends on what u want, my farm is at Ajah Axis, Abijo to be precise, it's about 3plot but I only used 1 plot for my first trial. Like Mr Okoro Emeka will advice start small n grow big wink
U can get a land to lease at ikorodu, mowe, Epe or Abijo depending on where is closer to ur location. If u re a beginner don't stay too far from ur farm bcoz these workers are something else except u intend doing it urself. Epe has better soil than all the above mentioned places, u can even plant without manure on Epe soil and it will do well, so fertile. I didn't farm there because of the distance and the road leading to Epe is too bad but I think they're working on it now. At Epe u must lease atleast an Acre but at Abijo u can get even a plot of land to start but the soil ehnn, hmmm. U have to amend the soil with loads of manure. So reply with ur Location in lagos so I can know where to help with land.

Call for your bio digester (Modern Sockaway).
Very quick to install. No waste removal. Little maintenance. Odorless. Little space required. Check my signature.

Surely going to beat the 50bags mark... trying cu99 in my state during the rainy season is suicide mission, I would have loved to try it, but the market women generally prefer Saira over here and it's way too expensive as we speak now
Paul, the fact that they don't like the darker green cucumber here is a big problem for farmers. More yield would have bn gotten with those varieties.
BTW, where do u buy ur hybrid seeds from around AKS? I need good cukes, herbanero/capsicum and tomato seeds.

one thing I like about sack farm is that it is easy to irrigate with hose,my workers use 40-45 mins to irrigate 1000 sacks, nothing fancy or elaborate just hose connected to 1 hp pump at 2-3 seconds per sack will give you 3-4 ltrs per sack.

Your plants looks healthy and your sacks looks straight. 1) Please, did you line those sacks? 2) Those sacks appears more robust than the cement sacks- which sack did you use and why? 3) Appears you adopted twin rows planting - What is the spacing between the sacks in the twin rows
and within the rows? 4) What is the spacing of your pathways? 5) How many plants did you plant in each sack?

Thanks
