If telepathy was real it would confer such an enormous survival advantage that nature would strongly select for it - meaning it should be widespread and prevalent in the population. (And us "normal" non-telepathic humans - if we didn't go extinct - would be in the minority. Perhaps kept as pets or curiosities, or a rare species confined to nature preserves... or regarded as sad cripples.)

Being able to sense predators and enemies at a distance means you and your tribe have significantly higher chances of not being killed or conquered.

Being able to sense prey and enemies at a distance means you have significantly higher chances of a successful hunt for food, or successfully repelling or eliminating threats to the tribe.

And think of the social cohesion amongst the members of your telepathic tribe! Think of the extraordinary coordination amongst your tribe when hunting, exploring, defending against attack, securing expanded territory.

In all cases you have significantly higher chances of reproducing, raising healthy offspring, and passing on your telepathy genes.



So if telepathy is real, why hasn't nature strongly selected for it?

Perhaps it's a two edged sword. Sickle cell anemia confers immunity to malaria - but simple cuts and contusions are potentially life threatening. Sure, telepathy means you can sense predators and enemies and prey at a distance. But it also means you experience their pain and fear and terror on a very intimate, visceral, empathic level, if you attack or kill them... or even if you just drive them away from access to resources that could be a life or death difference for themselves, their tribe, their offspring.

Perhaps it's a rare mutation. Say that only one individual in a small number of the total number of tribes will be born with telepathy. How would the rest of the tribe regard their one telepath? Perhaps they’d regard him or her as a revered holy person or shaman... or perhaps they’d kill him or her out of fear.


In order for the telepath genes to propagate, the rare and widely dispersed individual telepaths would have to become aware of each other, enter into physical proximity, and be together long enough to successfully reproduce and raise their offspring – and they might have to do so against the opposition or enmity of their respective tribes, or against the opposition or enmity of tribes without telepaths.

(Though even in these restricted circumstances, over time nature should still strongly select for telepathy – and the vast majority of humanity should today be telepathic.)



Perhaps those (relatively rare) individuals who claim to hear voices in their heads aren’t mentally ill. Perhaps they are telepaths who don’t understand their telepathy, or know how to use or control it; they’re picking up random “broadcasts” from the teeming humanity they live amongst... and perhaps the angry political or religious fanatics, or the actually mentally ill, broadcast loudest of all.

Humans are social animals. As such, a lot of the knowledge we need to survive and thrive needs to be taught. As I understand it, the human brain is hardwired to learn language... but no infant, toddler, or child will learn any accepted language if they don’t have a teacher. At least, they won’t learn any existing, recognized language.

(I’m too lazy to look up sources, but I’m pretty sure there are rare but documented cases of very young children growing up in the wilderness – metaphorically raised by wolves – developing their own languages.)

So if human society at large doesn’t recognize telepathy, how can those rare telepaths possibly understand or master their abilities – the way that “normal” human society teaches toddlers basic skills like math and verbal language and social interactions? (And how will those rare telepaths develop if they are treated as diseased pariahs by society at large?)



Or perhaps... just maybe, perhaps... there are telepaths amongst us today. But how would we know? Maybe they really ARE running everything – influencing human events and the course of civilization behind the scenes, in ways too subtle for any of us dumb “normal” humans to ever detect or be aware of. If they were really smart, compared to us, it would be just like the Matrix movies... except the humans would never be capable of determining that they – the humans – were being exploited, let alone figure out a way to fight back or resist.

Do the worms and bacteria in your compost heap know how they are being used and exploited for your personal advantage?



Do I believe that telepathy is real? Nope – no more than I believe in Bigfoot or vaccines cause autism or Uri Geller or the Flat Earth or the Piri Ries map or the Protocols of the Elders of Prion or Hillary ran a child sex ring out of the basement of a pizza restaurant that doesn’t actually have a basement.

On the other hand, if telepaths are real... how could I objectively determine that my observations are reliable, and not just being influenced by our telepathic overlords?
