Yemi Kale, the statistician-general of the federation, says the federal government has not released money for the National Bureau of Statistics to complete the unemployment report.
Its been a year since the bureau released Nigeria’s unemployment figures, which are usually released quarterly.
The statistician-general and the NBS have been accused of hoarding the figures, in order not to damage the reputation of President Muhammadu Buhari administration going into an election year.
NBS has postponed the release of the data, time and again, with the latest being from late November to December 7, 2018.
Based on previous reports, it is expected that unemployment in the countrywill soar to record highs, with 18.8 percent of the country’s population or 15.9 million people, unemployed.
Explaining the situation via Twitter, the NBS boss asked that Nigerians stop politicising the non-release of unemployment numbers, saying “You guys need to stop this”.
“I know it’s election time but I’ve said this repeatedly. Nobody is calling me to manipulate any data or not to release any data,” Kale said.
“The work can’t be completed due to budgetary releases. It's not hard to confirm when last we got data funding and how much.”
“The number of unemployed people within the labour force who are unemployed or underemployed increased from 13.6 million and 17.7 million respectively in Q2 2017 to 15.9 million and 18.0 million in Q3 2017,” the last NBS report, released in 2017, read.
Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People Democratic Party, has exploited the unemployment in the countryto drive his campaign, with the tagline: “Atiku means jobs”.
Ahead of the jobs creation report, Atiku had said his way of fighting crime and poverty is by creating jobs.
The job creation report for Q1 and Q2 2018 was initially billed to be released on October 10, but the new release date is December 17.

Yes it's funny that Nigerians expected (and still expect) a 73-year old, retired and under-educated millitary dictator to lead a complex, dynamic, multi-ethnic and multi-religious Nigeria of nearly 200-million people to becoming a prosperous country in this 21st century of super-complex global economy.

Something tells me the real figure of unemployed people in 2018 will almost double that of 2017, and if released to the public, it will shock everybody. This is why buhari had to stop funding to NBS so that they won't expose the cluelessness of his administration in the area of job creation... Instead of creating new jobs, Buhari's wrong economic policies has even destroyed some existing jobs causing more Nigerians to lose their jobs.

Buhari jibril will not release money because he knows the unemployment report will be damning and damaging to his electoral chances.

He has created unemployment and destroyed lives. Dumbohari has finished this country, therefore Nigerians have decided to ATIKULATE for the betterment of the future.

White collar Unemployment figures are currently over 18 million from what I gather and grey collar almost double that

To say that Buhari's government has failed is an understatement.
Apart from this NBS statistics, this government is also covering up so many things that could have shown the extent of their failure. Nigerians will be extremely shocked at the things that will be uncovered by the time buhari and his incompetent cabals leave office next year. So many things are going on that we are yet to know.

I can bet anything it has nothing to do with release of funds.How can funds not be released for a whole year?Its a big,fat lie!
Since NBS knows its now more difficult to doctor figures,its better it gives excuse of funds rather than issue a report it knows would be so damming of this government.
Buhari is the most incompetent man,military or civilian that has ever ruled Nigeria since 1914.
He has set new records incompetence,bigotry,parochialism and nepotism in all spheres of our lives.
He has even surpassed the terrible records he set in 1984 as a military ruler.
