Abortion can be defined in many ways: abortion simply means termination of pregnancy. However. WHO definition as termination of pregnancy before the embryo/fetus (baby in the womb) attains the age of viability (maturity).

In developing countries like Nigeria, the age of viability is accepted to be 28 weeks gestation. I.e. seven months.

Abortion is a spontaneous or deliberate ending of pregnancy before the fetus can expect to live. Abortion is also known as miscarriage.

ABORTION CAN BE GROUP INTO THREE

1. SPONTANEOUS: Those occuring naturally on their own.

2. INDUCED (CRIMINAL) DELIBRATE: Those knowingly and willingly made to happen.

3. THERAPEUTIC ABORTUON: Those that occur as a result of the combination of the above twp groups for instance when the product of conception is infected, and condemned but not expelled.

It becomes pertinent to deliberately evacuate it or applied as induction method.

SPONTANEOUS ABORTION


Spontaneous abortion is defined as natural or unaided termination of pregnancy before fetal maturity. This is the type of abortion that is commonly referred to as 'MISCARRIAGE'.

This occurs on its own but it could be predisposed to by a number of factors ranging from induced abortion, chromosal aberration, hormonal imbalance, womb abnormalities, abnormal sperm etc.

THERAPEUTIC ABORTION


Following the discovery of the detrimental effects of pregnancy on certain illness, therapeutic abortion was advocated for. Abortion is said to be therapeutic when there is a medical reason for it to be done and it must be permitted by the existing law of the country. It is a planned termination of pregnancy in approved hospital setting.

INDUCED ( CRIMINAL/ILLEGAL) ABORTION


This is a type that is commonly refer to abortion both by religious and non religious people. It may be defined as; artificial or intentional termination of a pregnancy using any numerous method against the law of the country. This may include the use of drugs, mechanical devices, manipulations or intrumentations. This however carries the highest risk of complications and maternal death.

It has been recorded that 10-60% of all pregnancies are terminated by induced abortion. Its effects cut across the emotional, social, psychological and spiritual aspects of an individual. It is therefore expedient to address this condition not only from the periphery but also to unearth its untold stories and menace for better appreciation
