The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has dismissed the threat by state governors to reduce their workforce if compelled to pay N30,000 as national minimum wage, saying it represented the position of a few anti-worker governors.

NLC president Comrade Ayuba Wabba, said in a statement yesterday that many worker-friendly governors are ready to pay even higher than the negotiated N30,000.

The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) had said in a communiqué on Wednesday that states would go bankrupt if forced to pay the proposed N30,000 minimum wage, unless the revenue sharing formula is reviewed or workers downsized.

Wabba said NGF’s threat to sack workers is not new in the struggle for a new minimum wage in Nigeria, adding that the one by the NGF, led by Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari, cannot be used to intimidate labour.

He said the consequences of retrenching workers are too grievous for any political office holder truly elected by the people to contemplate.

He said, “We propose that since a few political office holders are bent on enslaving Nigerian workers with peanuts mislabeled as salaries, we urge such elected public officials to subject their humungous salaries and allowances, reputed to be among the highest in the world, pro rata with the minimum wage they want to force down the throats of Nigerian workers. We, therefore, urge each State Governor to go to their respective states and inform workers and their families their individual position on the new national minimum wage of N30,000.”

The NLC president directed workers to vote out any politician or political party that refuses to pay the new national minimum wage of N30,000.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to be wary of some people, especially in the governors’ forum, who pursue selfish and personal reasons, to present him as an anti-worker president and by extension orchestrate anti-Buhari sentiments in the populace.

“We also call on him to speedily present to the National Assembly the bill on the National Minimum Wage for appropriate amendment and implementation. Because the New National Minimum Wage of N30,000 was a product of intense and robust negotiations at the National Minimum Wage Tripartite Negotiation Committee that lasted for one year,” Wabba said.

If this country never tire u, make i no why.
I still don't get the rationale behind the stern opposition by Govs to this minimum wage increment. Its so distasteful considering the Colossal allowances bonus and salaries taken home by these Never do wells. But they are so quick to initiate anti people policies. Its like whatever will keep the people in bondage is acceptable. So long they cant rise, they can fight!! I hate Politicians walahi.

Like someone said on this forum, Nigeria is really the Headquarters of hell on earth. Imagine that these governors are struggling to pay 30k per month which is even not up to $200.

Wabba, you have been played to the gallery by government. Your undoing is agreeing to call off the strike before it even started. Of course we SANE Nigerians know you were evenly compensated and appreciated but the untold hardship you and your cronies are about to unleash on innocent Nigerians is about to happen.....

Nevertheless, deceit, lies, propaganda, etc do not last forever.

TIME SHALL TELL.

Most of the state governors are wicked, greedy selfish and self-centered. How do they give their children or their girls' friend. Am tired of this news, we should be talking of implementation not these trash from NGF.

Sentiments are over riding reality here.
The truth is that there will be grave repercussions for everyone if this 66% wage increase is implemented.
Its not feasible for now.
Let them start at 23-24k then in a few years time it should be reviewed and maybe adjusted again.
For a start minimum wage increase to 30k will likely see fuel price increased to N180 at least by whoever wins the next election because the goverment has to free money somewhere to get d new salary finance.Ditto,VAT and electricity cost would definitely go up.
Transport costs would skyrocket and other costs will increase correspondingly.
Sentiments should not override commonsense and economic logic.

NLC should be about insisting that workers be paid what politicians get paid. They should eyeball provisions for security votes received by State Governors. They should speak to long, expensive and ostentatious motor vehicle convoys by State Governors and government officials. They should keep in focus the misgovernance of our clime. Finally the NLC should be mindful that Nigerial is a Federal State with each State at liberty to pay what its economy dictates as affordable. That is when NLC will be taken seriously!
