Dear Jzhane, My name is Hina. My parents are from Nigeria but I was born and raised in the Kenya. My parents however got divorced when I was 17 years old. I do not blame them for getting a divorce but they sometimes use their divorce experience to judge my relationships. It is a well known fact that Nigerians do not like divorce. I do not think anyone likes divorce either but sh*t happens. To them,it is like a stigma is placed on you when you are divorced. Like it was your fault that your marriage failed. As a result of what I saw in my parents divorce process,I made up my mind that being married is not what determines how successful your relationship would be. So my partner and I have been together for four years. We love each other so much. He also does not believe in marriage. He gave me a commitment ring and we live together. My parents are against my relationship because we do not want to get married. My mother in particular has expressed her dislike for him just because of that. But I find my parents attitude hypocritical. Their marriage did not work,they got divorced. Does that not say that marriage is not the ultimate to make one happy or fulfilled in life. Something happened however that shook me. I have been with my partner for four years and all these years,he always said he would never get married.
