In a bid to end the over three weeks old strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the Federal government met with the Union Leaders yesterday, November 26.

However, the meeting which was held at the Ministry of Education headquarters, ended in deadlock as both parties failed to reach a common ground. The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, and the Permanent Secretary, Sonny Echono led the Federal Government delegation, while the ASUU National President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi led the Union.

ASUU embarked on nationwide strike on November 4, and is demanding among other things the implementation of the 2019 agreement – revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowances, salary shortfalls and pension matters.

The Union first met with the FG on November 15, however the meeting failed to resolve the issues in contention. Meanwhile, students in the public universities have continued to suffer unnecessary delay as a result of the strike action.
