I grew up in a society where any career you chose that doesn't begin with going to higher institution is discouraged. My parents made a mistake believing going to school is the ultimate ingredient for success and that made me ignored my talents, as a result of that; it slowed down my success pace.

A friend of mine discovered his son's boxing talent when they were playing and his 7 year old son gave him an outstanding punch grin. He never saw the negative side of it but he got inspired and enrolled his son in a boxing school. Today, the little boy is becoming something spectacular.

We often ignore the God given talents of our children and selfishly choose what we want for them. A teenager who doesn't know anything about Mathematics or English but she is a good dancer will be seen as a potential slayqueen or wayward person. The parents will ignore the fact that she is already gifted and her gift is not morally wrong.

Education is not everything, for me education is Plan B to success. The plan A is your talent or gift. That is why those with talents and gifts will always survive in a country where employment rate is poor especially Nigeria.

If I discover my son to be a good football player, I will make sure I get to the nearest football academy to enrol him as soon as possible. grin

Una weldone! cheesy

Oya, my first son, loves to party! Where will he fit intongue

The writeup is nice except the part that says "education should be plan B". This is wrong and it's not the op's fault because we've misconstrued the term "education". Education in the real sense is supposed to make an individual improve his potentials (what you called talent) so that the person will contribute meaningfully to his society. But what we have today is the education that makes people dependent.
Take high five! You captured the Concept of Education so Succinctly. Beautiful!!!

So true.... my main talent is to draw very well...and i have this passion for flying...to be a pilot.. but i saw my self in computer engineering.. university of Lagos.. guess what.. my set graduated 2017 after 5years since 2012.. that same 2017 due to my poor performance i left to Actuarial Science another bloodying hell.. and well due to i was hit before.. i am not slacking again.. now am currently struggling although am doing well in my grades.. but i promised my self that wen am out of university.. even if its masters i wanna do.. i will do what is in my mind.. not even my parents can force or decide for me what i will do.. i know parents always wants to decide for their children but sometimes your decision hurts your kids and they re too scared to talk to the parents about it cos the parents will make them lack in some things.. well thank God my momma understands now...in a way my new course is showing my abilities.. not that am a dullard but i am efficient and my brain is really good..but the true is..i will never fit in again with my mates.. i dissociate myself from them and i am badly depressed.. my overall best student in my former department(computer engineering)is a corper now in unilag and i see him evey morning on my way to class.. i cry everyday.. but the Lord makes me stronger.. i just hope my story will change some parents mind.. let ur children express them selves but guide them in the right path.. and one more thing.. my drawing skill is so good.. but till now my mom hates when i draw..and when i draw and people praise me.. i confront her.. and sorry to say.. she tells me she never hates me drawing.. but i can see my momma heart so well and i hate to make her sad

Don't give up your dreams, the only person no one can stop is YOU.Its never too late to begin again when on the right path.
You have discovered what gives you fulfillment don't trade it please.
As for your friends who are serving, remember everyone's path in life is different and life treats us individually.
One thing is sure if you follow hard after your talent and dreams one day every one who opposed it will celebrate you.
While still in Unilag nothing stops you from perfecting your drawing and developing it more.
There is no limit to what you can do in life when you are determined.

Very true.
One of the deputy governors in Nigeria was my classmate, he stole from almost everyone in my class. He later became a yahooboy, his father encouraged him to join politics, today he is doing very well. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin
hmmm, politics is not talent, is part of education.

Truth is most child have something unique.
Some of us have got parents that feel threatned and insecured by the talents\passion/zeal and abilities of their child and will do everything within their power to make sure their child end up living a miserable life like they do, even worse.this is caused by some kind of hate.

Re: Parents, Always Pay Attention To Your Children's Talents by addictiv(m): 11:11pm On Nov 28, 2018
I have a friend who is a talented keyboardist, singer, actor, dancer, and comedian. this guy is the complete entertainment package. He wanted to study music but his parents never supported it. They wanted him to be an engineer, he wrote jamb a couple of time and did not get admission. After a while he got admission to study physics, he couldn't cope in class and struggled to graduate. He is so broken, lost, has no desire for a fulfilled life anymore.. I weep in my heart whenever I see him cos I know his parents have turned someone who would have soared to the top of the world into a mere observer. I keep praying and encouraging him to keep moving forward. This attitude by parents is prevalent in middle class and low income homes. The parents want their kids to study popular courses so as to raise the family profile and possible earnings when the child starts working. But take a look at the very rich and super rich class, they encourage their kids to follow their passion because the bag is already secured. No wonder these kids usually succeed in areas such as music, arts, fashion, literature, etc. Education without passion is no education at all.

Some parents believe that in order to succeed, you must be a scholar.

Exactly! If parents had paid attention, they would have discovered that their girls were developing olosho aka slay mamarism talent and stopped it. They would have saved us decent men from this scourge.

How to find a wife in the midst of these ladies be my headache now.
we found husbands despite most of you being dogs! So you people too should manage us as oloshos!
