Nigeria Medical Association Explains Why Doctors Are Leaving The Country by MediahelmNGR: 7:01am On Nov 29, 2018
The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has attributed poor remuneration and inadequate health facilities as some of the major reasons for mass exodus of medical doctors from the country.

Dr Ekpe Phillips, the FCT Chapter NMA Chairman, said this at the opening of the Annual Health Week of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in Abuja where described the pay package of doctors in Nigeria as poor, stressing the need for government to increase the remuneration of doctors to address the challenge.

He noted that many doctors who left the country to take up foreign appointment did so due to inadequate facilities among other factors. He listed mass unemployment, lack of placement for residency faced by a high proportion of medical professionals in Nigeria as other factors.

Phillips said Nigeria is losing doctors to foreign countries, adding that Nigerian doctors are leaving the country for greener pastures and the workload is becoming too much on the doctors that stay.
We hear doctors collapsing because the workload is too much because their colleagues have left to find a greener gesture. We have internal and international brain drain; Nigeria now has one doctor catering for 5,000 patients instead of one doctor to 600 patients.
Brain drain is now becoming pandemic and sad news because government did not and still is not doing enough; there is no serious commitment to stemming this syndrome. Nigeria which was one of the richest 50 countries in the early 70s has metro greased to become one of the 25 poorest countries in the World today,’’ he said.

Dr Michael Olarewaju, the President of Association of Residents Doctors, FCT chapter, said that brain drain was a massive problem to Nigeria’s health system. He said that if the problem was not properly tackled in the next two to three years there would not be enough doctors to treat patients in the country. He observed that initially the problem in the sector was strike by health workers “but now they are not going on strike but are exiting the country’’.

Why won't they leave the country when ordinary hospital cleaners earn more than them abroad, working honestly and diligently in this Nigeria doesn't pay at all...

They're leaving because they're so bad that everybody googles their ailment.

(Last time one of them here on nairaland told us to Google our ailments. Or was that a nurse with a stethoscope?)

Modified: Don't preach to me Nigerian doctors. Ask their patients. Then take the average of votes for and against them.

Nigerian Doctors are the best in the world.

Not by experiences of the patients.

And they don't sound happy about themselves either.

What a country where a politician is given more than enough for doing nothing. Yet they still loot. While those who are supposed to contribute to nation building are frustrated out of the country. Very soon, no one will be left in Nigeria.

You never know what you have until you have the knowledge to know. Nigerians expect newly graduated doctors to tell them everything about their ailments.

Medicine is too broad a field and that is why there are many specialties. Try to study the course and find out what it takes. Many people complaining here cannot pass 2nd MBBS let alone 3rd

People can Google how to go about it, that was the advice we were given about medical ailments. People were told to Google them.

How hard could it be? Google is your friend. That's what the doctors on nairaland say.

Not just NURSES.
A HOSPITAL CLEANER in the US earns at least 12USD per hour, making him richer than a Senior Nigerian Medical Doctor.
The only CHALLENGE ABROAD is ACCOMMODATION, that’s why people get their spouses working.
People even divorce their husbands and wives for being too lazy to work because there are JOBS.
PARENTS ask their adult children to leave homes when they contribute nothing to home servicing.

Nigerian doctors are bad, yet they thrive abroad. Whose fault is it when a woman in labor has to bring generator to a government hospital? It goes on and on and no I’m not a doctor.

Wait, let me do the maths!

Modify: that is around #130,000 per month.
It now depends on how much Nigerian Doctors earn per month!
But, I think you are right.
That's a shame!

RE: MODIFY!
Ur calculation is wrong, if someone earn 12dollar per hour, assuming the person works 12 hours a day, that's
144 dollars and that person works 26days a month that's 3744dollars in a month, now convert that to naira.

Thank you, I was calculating 12 dollars a day instead of 12 dollars an hour... Thanks man!!
Let me modify!
