• The participation of women in politics in Nigeria and Africa should be encouraged.

Women, for a very long time, claimed to have been sidelined in Nigerian and African politics at large.

Prior to the inception of Nigeria’s fourth republic in 1999, women have always been underrepresented in Nigeria’s politics, thereby leading to a great shortfall of women’s participation in politics and other electoral processes which define democracy. The low participation of women in politics have been attributed to the high rate of male dominance and increasing male participation in politics.

For democracy to thrive freely in Nigeria, it is not only achievable through constitutionalism or establishing electoral processes that give equal rights to men and women in the country, but also through reawakening, resuscitation, and sensitization of women to participate in politics. This will enable them to help give back to their respective constituencies.

Gender-based sentiments and discrimination thriving in developing counties like Nigeria hinder the smooth sail of gender-equal representation in Nigeria’s government. Indisputably, the low rate of women’s appointment as cabinet members of any administration is a testimony of the result of women’s participation in politics.
