A woman has shared her heartbreaking testimony after she was imprisoned for nearly 13 years for a crime she knew nothing about. 

Narrating her story at a Redeemed church branch in Lagos, the woman revealed that in July 2001, when she was a final year law student, she dated a young lecturer who promised to marry her. 

She said a particular student also wanted to date her but she declined after she found out he was a cultist.

On that fateful day (July 31, 2001), some cultists stormed the home of her lecturer boyfriend and killed him in her presence. 

The family of the deceased lecturer accused the lady of being their accomplice as she was asked to name the cultists involved in the murder.  She told them she didn't know the cultists because they were masked.

The lady was later arrested and arraigned for conspiracy because nobody was caught. She was later sentenced to death.

She revealed that her father died after she was sentenced to death and her mother stood strongly by her after selling some of their properties to follow up the case. 

After waiting many years for her execution, the lady was later discharged and acquitted on the 12th of July, 2013 after she was found innocent. 

The woman who is now married - just welcomed a new baby few months ago and decided to share her story to the world.

Why convict someone based on assumptions?

Was it not the duty of the state to look for CONCRETE EVIDENCE to nail her if they see her as a suspect?

The judge that handled the case should have been dismissed after she was discharged and acquitted.

Hmmmm. I just weak. God I thank you for present freedom and eternal freedom in advance.

Nigeria police and judiciary are not that useless.
There is no way she could have been sentenced to death when there was no direct evidence she committed the murder.
No police prosecutor would request for that and no judge would sentence her to death.The worse would have been some years sentence for being an accomplice.
Its either she was actually the murderer and accordingly sentenced to death when the prosecutor showed incontrovertible evidence;or its just another garnished testimony lie.

Sentenced to death but still in prison for 13 years pending her execution? I'm not a lawyer, but how long does it takes to execute a death sentence?

Anyways if her story is true and I was to be her... I'll actually go back and commit the crime I was wrongly sentenced for, but this time the judge will be the victim.

True talk, law abiding citizen doesn't work in Nigeria

did she mention to the police that she turned down a cultist in favor of the lecturer, if she had told the police that she knew non of the people that killed the man, why is she mentioning the cultist she turned down in her testimony?
By her testimony, there is likely a connection between the person she turned down and the lecturer's death and if she didn't give the police enough information to create that link then, she is as good as an accomplice in the eyes of the law and can be rearrested with her statement standing as evidence against her.

is a good thing that you are freed but becareful what you say out there. no amount of prison term you served can be enough justice to compensate for the lecturer's life. his family will continue to seek for justice and your testimony may just give them what they are looking for.

Very painful, probably the guy's parents are rich and the Lady's lawyer must be a terrible one too.

Thank God for your life but this story is half baked. You were dating the cultist and the lecturer same time. The cultist found out and killed the lecturer. You could not sell him out to the police because you love him. Thanks
