GARISSA—There is a growing tension in Wajir and Garissa this week follwoing rumours that tea flasks contain ” cancer-causing tablets.”

The alleged tablet is sandwiched between the outer glass and the inner glass holding the content of the flask.

Thousands of flasks were destroyed across Wajir on Wednesday morning and the panic spread on social media, affecting Garissa town.

Kulan Post understands that the ”tablet” is actually Asbestos fibers contained in the separators of the double glass wall of some thermos flasks. The separator is used to separate two glass walls in vacuum condition and to minimize heat transfer from inside to outside the flask. If the thermos breaks, the users may inhale asbestos fibres, which are carcinogenic (having the potential to cause cancer)
