First of all, no matter your level of education, your age or your status in the company, Chinese man is your boss and more significant than you, even if the Chinese man is an ex-convict with marks of handcuffs clearly showing on his wrist like a hand-band. You must not challenge or report them no matter what they do, even though he stone (which is usual habit), abuse your generation or your country. If you try to report to their superior, is either you are sack and forfeit your work payment or tell you to beg him so that you can be paid for your work.
Again, you must resume work 7: am and close by 7: pm, sometimes 9: pm depend on their discretion. Cab crane are being used to convey workers to their respective site, the crane which you will clearly see warning written – do not stand under the boom of crane. The crane will be over with Nigerians, stacked together like log of woods transporting them for like 12km on a dusty and bumpy road. The front seat will be occupied by the Chinese artisans while the open-back is one being occupied by Nigerians including the graduate engineers. Even if there is space at front seat they won’t allow you to sit with them
Looking at the working hour one will expect substantial amounts as remuneration. The hourly payments go thus;
Labourers -- N100 per hour
Drivers -- N110 per hour
Engineers -- N150 per hour
If you do calculation very well it will amount to 35000, 39000, and 50000 for labourers, drivers, and engineers respectively, and that is after working for 11 hours per day for 30 days save Sunday that we close by 4: pm. You must be not be absent for 3 day in a row even though you are critically sick. If at the end of the month you are paid the amount that doesn’t conform with your working hours, you dare not complain ,if you do is either you are sack or your master (as we call them) tell you ‘MAALAKAPI’ (if you try tell him the same, he can go any length to hurt you. Which mean it is a very bad curse). If workers die while on site, the maximum their family can get is N30,000.
With all these maltreatment, it comes to your mind their supposed to be union or government agencies that we should report all these atrocities to. The union is a toothless bulldog, that even the union chairman had once been slapped severally and sacked by the Chinese boss simply because we sometime staged a peaceful protest for the maltreatment we are facing.
Government agencies only drive by in exotics car once in a while without stopping for once to ask us the way we are being treated or the working conditions. If you see the safely boot is like a rubber tennis, no any allowance. The workers to them is like worthless animals that depend on them for survival.
