Jefferson Tells FBI He Delivered Cash To Home of Nigeria's Vice President



GREENBELT, Md. - Nigeria's vice president sought up to $500,000 and a stake in a technology venture in his country, according to statements Rep. William Jefferson made to an FBI informant that were detailed in court documents filed in a bribery probe of the congressman.

Mr. Jefferson allegedly told the FBI informant that he had delivered "African art," which authorities believe was code for cash, to the Potomac, Md., home of the wife of the vice president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, at midnight last July 31.

Details of the alleged deal were included in an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court to secure a warrant to search Mr. Abubakar's house in Potomac. The affidavit was unsealed Monday by the federal court in Greenbelt.

The affidavit says delivery of the money came shortly after Mr. Jefferson allegedly received $100,000 in cash from the FBI informant that was supposed to help smooth the way for a Kentucky telecommunications company, iGate Incorporated, to conduct business in Nigeria.

According to another search warrant affidavit for Mr. Jefferson's congressional office, filed last month, $90,000 in cash was found in a freezer at Mr.Jefferson's Washington home. A briefcase similar to the one Jefferson used to carry the money was found in a later search of his New Orleans home, according to federal court documents filed there.

The 39-page affidavit released Monday in Maryland, some sections of which remain sealed, does not mention Mr. Abubakar by name. But it does identify the Potomac home as the residence of Jennifer Douglas, Mr. Abubakar's wife. It also refers to "the vice president of Nigeria" when detailing the alleged scheme.

Documents Point to Bribes of Nigerian by Congressman



WASHINGTON, June 6 — The Federal Bureau of Investigation raided the Maryland home of the vice president of Nigeria last summer in search of bribe money that the bureau believed had been paid to him by Representative William Jefferson, according to documents released on Tuesday.

The documents included an affidavit signed by an F.B.I. agent who said that the Nigerian vice president, Atiku Abubakar, now a candidate for president of that oil-rich West African nation, asked for at least half of the profits of a technology company controlled by Mr. Jefferson that was seeking to do business in Nigeria.

About the same time last year, the documents said, Mr. Jefferson told colleagues of his plans to bribe Nigerian officials, including Mr. Abubakar, in exchange for their help in winning business in Nigeria, and that Mr. Abubakar would be paid as much as $500,000 in cash.

The F.B.I. affidavit, which was dated Aug. 2, and other documents were made public over the objections of Mr. Jefferson, a Louisiana Democrat who is the target of a wide-ranging corruption investigation. He has denied wrongdoing and has said the information in the court papers would unfairly damage his reputation.

In the affidavit, an F.B.I. agent, Edward S. Cooper, said cellphone records suggested that Mr. Jefferson visited a home owned by Mr. Abubakar and his wife in Potomac, Md., an affluent suburb of Washington, around midnight last July 31 with the intention of delivering money to the Nigerian leader while he was on a visit to the United States. The next day, the F.B.I. said, Mr. Jefferson told a confidential informant that he had delivered "African art" — which the agent described as code for a cash payment — and that Mr. Abubakar "was very pleased."

Yes, it's from 2006, but it's real, the 2006 bribery and criminal investigation made Atiku a PPE (Politically Exposed Person) and a VISA ban via proclamation by the president of the USA.

The same 2006 case is still the reason why Atiku can not enter the USA today and if he did, he'll end up in jail.


The age of the story doesn't alter the fact that he committed a crime, a crime that regardless of the age is still live and could send him to jail.


If you are going to defend a corrupt, crooked and criminal character like Atiku, find a better argument and line of support.

It's a banking term used for people in politics, their families and associates.

It's attached to their account details to make sure no cash or kind transactions pass through to them to compromise State functions. Buhari is a PPE, so is his wife Aisha and daughter Zahra.
