danny welbeck may have already played his final
game for Arsenal with reports suggesting he will
not be offered a new contract at the Emirates.
The England striker suffered a serious ankle injury
last month in the Europa League 0-0 draw
against Sporting Lisbon, which might rule him out
until the end of the season.
It has now been widely reported that Welbeck will
join Aaron Ramsey in not being offered a new
contract as Unai Emery continues to shape the
squad in his own identity.
The 28-year-old has required two rounds of
surgery on the troublesome ankle, and he may
not have another chance to demonstrate what he
can offer Emery on the pitch.
Welbeck has scored five goals in 14 appearances
this season, but the severity of the injury means
he won't be rushed back to fitness. Arsenal have previously offered new contracts to
crocked stars as a show of support and an
incentive to come back stronger, as witnessed
with Santi Cazorla and Abou Diaby, but Emery is
taking a sterner approach.
The club recently offered Mesut Ozil a new
£300,000-a-week deal, while large contracts were
also handed to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and
Henrikh Mkhitaryan last January.
Welbeck turned down the chance to join
Southampton last summer, and since joining the
club for £15m from Manchester United in 2014,
the striker has scored 32 goals in 126
appearances in all competitions for the Gunners.
