•Commences repairs of Alaka Bridge

Major repairs of all expansion joints of the popular Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos will commence in January 2019, New Telegraph has learnt.

According to the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mr. Adedamola Kuti, the contractor will move to site next month.

Speaking with newsmen on the bridge at the weekend, Kuti also disclosed that thereafter, the renovation work would begin on the underwater repair of the piles supporting the bridge.

Besides, the controller disclosed that Alaka Bridge would be closed to traffic this weekend to give a room for its repairs, appealing to all motorists to comply with traffic guidelines and details of alternative routes reeled out to them pending the completion of the work.

Presently, the Federal Controller of Works said that milling and resurfacing work of the bridge was already on-going to ensure a hitch-free movement during Christmas celebration. The contract was awarded to Reynolds Construction Company (RCC).

According to him, the milling and resurfacing was not part of the original contract for the renovation of the bridge, but that government embarked on it to ensure easy movement and safety of the 11.4-kilomtre bridge.
Kuti said the resurfacing was part of a maintenance exercise to keep the over 25-year-old bridge in tip-top condition

The Project Manager, RCC, Dvir Hirsch, said the challenge for the project bordered on traffic and safety in order to ensure faster delivery of the job.

Meanwhile the Federal Government has reopened a section of the Ijora -7up Bridge to traffic. The particular section was closed to traffic five months ago to give room for its repairs.

The reopening of the bridge to traffic was conducted by the Federal Controller of Works. The Managing Director, Hallekem Limited, the contractor that handled the project, Haim Halle, said the firm completed the repair of the 325 meters stretch of the bridge in five months, instead of the one year contract period.

Hope they have prepared and make way for alternative roads cuz that bridge is the most busy one for now. They should start doing the needful now or else the traffic on ikorodu road will be second to none.

The work was not given to family and friends as was the practice during the reign of PDP. It was given to a competent organization as you read above. RCC is a world class construction company so go to sleep and don't bother yourself.

Sheet piles Piers are built around them and most of the water pumped and repairs carried out. Some may involve under water welding / casting.

They are built same way. A pier Wall of sheet pile is either sunk or built at the spot, and work is done inside. When finished, the it is taken away and the structure is there.

i have never see this kind of government in Nigeria before, Election is near and he is still perfoming, he is still bringing up project, working on it and still making good impact. Nt like the other way, the other party, wey the formula to siphon Nigeria money for election wud be there thought.

Is it not because we lack maintenance culture that caused so many of our infrastructure to detoriorate? You just want to join issues where you should not.

RCC is already on site for the resurfacing work. I’ve noticed they work mostly at night from 9PM.

The work has already started because I can boldly say that they are currently resurfacing the bridge has we speak, so probably in the light of that they want to use that opportunity to fix the expansion joints. Good one.

those are not piers, those are actually the formwork to give the pier shape and form.
