Onitsha, World's Dirtiest City

Approaching Okpoko market through thick smog on the back of an okada (motorcycle taxi), the natural reaction is to cover your nose to protect yourself from the dust storm – but the effort is futile.

When a lorry zooms past, kicking up yet another red cloud of dirt, a trader turns the head of a sleeping toddler away from the road, a protective act that is as poignant as it is pointless.

This is a typical day in the southern Nigerian port city of Onitsha – which last year gained notoriety when it was ranked the worst city in the world for the staggering levels of PM10 particulate matter in its air.

Onitsha’s mean annual concentration was recorded at 594 micrograms per cubic metre by the World Health Organization – massively exceeding the WHO’s annual guideline limit for PM10s of 20μg/m3.

PM10 refers to coarse dust particles between 10 and 2.5 micrometres in diameter, while PM2.5s are even finer and more dangerous when inhaled, settling deep in a person’s lungs. Sources of both include dust storms, gases emitted by vehicles, all types of combustion, and industrial activities such as cement manufacturing, construction, mining and smelting. Onitsha scores highly on most of the above – as do other rapidly growing Nigerian cities such as Kaduna, Aba and Umuahia, all of which also featured in the WHO’s 20 worst offenders for PM10s.

In Onitsha’s very busy Okpoko market, my air quality monitor registers 140 for PM10s and 70 for PM2.5s – all way over recommended healthy levels, but still nothing compared to the readings triggered in other parts of this densely populated commercial and industrial hub.

The entire vicinity of the market is perpetually dusty, as wood-sellers saw lumber into different shapes and sizes. The air here is made worse by all the fine sand particles that fly off the back of trucks as they visit one of the many dredging companies on the bank of the River Niger, just behind the wood market.

ODVanguard:

I don't know why you and totit keep indulging that omanbala ediot. His entire existence revolves around proving to himself that his state can measure up to the SW. Aerodrome GRA at Samonda alone has more expensive edifices than anything in his entire state. That is just one estate in IB. Not to mention the recently completed Crimson court at Jericho.

The aerial views of fringe Ogun towns and estates that border Lagos, e.g Arepo, Magboro, Mowe, Ibafo, etc, beats anything they have in their entire region. Magodo 2 at isheri alone beats anything they have to offer, not to mention Arepo's citiView estates, both in Ogun state. The difference between us and them is that we are not as desperate as they are to prove any point like them -- he goes as far as desperately commissioning aerial drone shots of his region's GRAs and private residences all for the sake of dick-measuring and showing off real estate development. undecided

More individual real estate developments are happening in Ogun and Oyo than the entire SE x3, coz our people are building their own homes and take pride in doing so (even if na bungalow self) than living in those gaudy looking-type 'high-rises' that litter the SE landscape -- it should be obvious that their preference for such buildings is due to scarcity of land, a problem which we don't have in our region). They will rather live in those gaudy looking things than build their own houses due to shortage of land.

Personally, I have long fashied this business of measuring dicks with them because it is pointless really, and has no effect outside of NL (it still won't stop Emeka from boarding the next bus to the SW this very evening smiley ), that's beside the fact that it has long been settled on this very forum that won o ki'n se egbe wa). That chap you are exchanging banters with trolls for a living. He has no other vocation besides trolling online, 24/7, #Fact. He will just waste your precious time coz for him it is a full time j.o.b.

Thanks Bruv.Do you remember the 'Yorubas are the most educated, richest blah, blah thread?..It really opened my eyes to the fact that Yorubas control the economy 9f Lagos and Nigeria by the sheer number of industries they own.I learnt this through this forum.By doing this,I have come to know that the Igbos still have a lot of catching up to do and Yorubas also need to continue the development and progress they kick-started in Nigeria and even Africa.

I have his time and I have seen that the entire Igboland is struggling to have the facilities that only Ibadan has.
