The British magazine Spectator in its annual indices earlier this year had ranked Nigeria as the world’s second worst electricity supply nation, just behind war torn Yemen and before disaster ravaged Haiti.

In a recent study by the German news agency Deutsche Welle, it was observed that as of 2018, around 90 milliom rural Nigerian dwellers were not connected to the country’s electricity grid. A plight that government has either deliberately ignored or is just not capable of easing.

The German news agency discovered in a focused study that In Unguwar Dogo, a town with over 20,000 people in the president’s state “Katsina”, the inhabitants still have to work 40 minutes to find villages with electricity sometimes just to charge their mobile phones.

An elderly resident identified as Ramu Kabiru recalled how she spent 2,400 Naira on batteries to power her Chinese made torch light when the price of DPK sky rocketed. More women also lamented that lack of electricity forces them to cook with fuel wood and it also hinders their entrepreneurial potentials.

With daily electricity production averaging 3,850 Megawatts, Nigeria’s minister for power Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola was heard stating at a colloquium earlier in the year that the country suffers from darkness because it had incompetent people in the power sector.
