Following the crackdown on internet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo Boys” across the state, some of them have relocated from Abraka.
Others have also sold their cars and went into hiding for fear of being arrested and prosecuted by the police, following the directive of the Delta State Governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa, who had, last month, ordered a crackdown on internet fraudsters.
The order by the governor was given barely two weeks ago, following the gruesome murder of a 300 level student of Mass Communication student of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, by suspected “Yahoo Boys” for ritual purpose.
Our correspondent learnt that some “Yahoo Boys”, in a bid to escape the long arm of the law have gone underground.
While some sold their luxury cars, hid their phones at home and stopped living flamboyant lifestyles as part of measures to evade arrest, others have remained hardened but rather move with caution around Abraka and environs.
One of them who spoke on grounds of anonymity, said: “As you can see, Abraka is empty because some of us have moved out to secure new locations until the town is calm because the police are on our trail.
“I have sold my Venza car, cut my dreadlock and stopped going to hotels and night clubs. You must apply caution in such a situation due to the man hunt on us.
“The ones going into fetishism are spoiling hustle for us. We now move in fear of the police, in fact; some of us have grown eyes on the back.”
Also speaking in the same vein, another called on the police to concentrate on ritualists and politicians, especially now that election was around the corner.
The source said: “It is unfortunate that ritual killers have spoilt our work. Any ritual person now is brandished a “Yahoo Boy.” Less I forget, ritualists have existed for decades and centuries but the attention has been shifted to us because of some bad elements among us.
“To be involved in internet fraud, you must be intelligent because you are dealing with the white men who colonised us, so, it depends on your deceiving power. Once you can make your mails and proposal look real, you will get paid and so not all of us are into rituals as alleged”.
