The guava belongs to the family of mytaceae and originated from tropical America. It is a
tropical fruit that is popular for its sweet and refreshing taste. Its fruit can have red, pink
or white flesh. It can be consumed fresh or as a beverage, syrup, ice- cream, cheese,
toffee, jam, juice, wine, and dehydrated and canned products.
The leaves and skin of the fruit are reputed for its medicinal and nutritional value and
is also useful as a hypoglycemic agent in traditional medicine. Guava tea is also a byproduct
of the guava plant.
Guava can be cultivated in a number of ways, through seeds, grafting and air layering
and it is one of the tropical trees that can be grown in a container or pot. Air layering is the
best way to propagate guava asexually, as it can develop roots in 3 months and fruit in
6 months.

MATERIALS REQUIRED TO
PROPAGATE POTTED GUAVA
1. Mature Guava plant of at least 3 years old.
2. Medium/large plastic containers or pot.
3. Topsoil
4. Cocopeat or any other rooting medium
(including manure).
5. Sharp knife or blade.
6. Water.
7. Plastic wrap
8. Secateurs or scissors

PROPAGATION OF GUAVA BY AIR LAYERING.
1. Select high quality and healthy mature guava plant with numerous stems.
2. Mark 3-5cm on the bark of a carefully selected stem and peel it off with the aid of a sharp
blade or knife.
3. Cover and wrap the peeled stem with a watered rooting medium (manure or Coco peat) with
the help of plastic wrap

4. After 2 months or when the roots have developed from the wrapped growth medium
cut the stem from the plant.
5. Transplant the new plant to a plastic container filled with topsoil.

6. To encourage new vegetative growth, prune off all other branches of the stem.
7. The new plant should be nursed in a shaded area and watered frequently for a month to
harden the plant.
8. The plant can be brought out to the open after a month.
9. Apply manure to the plant and support with stakes, if it’s a heavy fruiting type.
10. The fruits mature and are ready to be picked in the next 3 or 4 months which is quicker
