The Action Congress on Thursday said it was partnering with the Democratic Peoples party, the Integrity Group of the All Nigeria Peoples Party and some members of the Peoples Democratic Party to form the Action Congress of Nigeria.

In an interview with our correspondent on Thursday, AC‘s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the party‘s new name would be ratified at its national convention slated for Monday, next week, in Lagos.

According to Mohammed, the partnership is more of a change of name than a merger.

He said, “The change of name must be seen beyond the party; this is a mass movement- a lot of people who have been sitting on the fence have now indicated their willingness to join the party. It is a sort of revolution; and those involved have agreed to a name change.

“At the convention, the party will consider and approve the amendment of its manifesto as well as change of motto, emblem, flag and slogan.”

He noted that the convention had been slated for Monday in order to ‘put things in order before the Ramadan period, which commences next week, moreso, we are not sure if the Independent National Electoral Commission will go ahead to conduct the general election in January 2011.

“We have, however, given adequate notice to INEC and the party’s delegates about the convention.”
