Any moment from now, operatives of the State Security Services (SSS) will arrive the main campus of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko in Orumba North Council Area of Anambra State to investigate the allegation of certificates forgery by some students of the institution.

Already, the management of the institution had concluded plans to formally invite the SSS operatives on campus to thoroughly screen; investigate and possibly detect any forged certificate used by some students to secure admission into the polytechnic.

The Rector of the institution, Professor Godwin Onu, who disclosed this to newsmen in his office on Friday, explained that it was important to involve the SSS in the investigation of suspected forged certificates for some obvious reasons that would soon be made public.

Onu further disclosed that the idea of drafting the security operatives to investigate the matter came up as a result of the recent detection of suspected forged certificates at the records department of the institution with the assistance of mechanism put in place by his administration. The rector recalled that no fewer than 88 students of the institution were recently rusticated for being in possession of forged results from other institutions of higher learning in the country, adding that six lecturers were equally suspended in connection with their alleged involvement in questionable behaviour as against due process.

Onu said the Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company had been engaged in the printing of certificates for the institution to make it difficult for forgery. He, therefore, warned that his administration would not comprise its initial decision to wage war against corruption, insubordinations, among others.

According to the rector, “we are cleaning and sweeping any thing that will put us in a bad light so that any student from this institution will be able to defend any certificate he or she has and that will make labour market yearn for our products. Again, we have concluded arrangements to commence study of a Chinese language in Oko.

“We have also put in place effective machinery to check-mate examination malpractices, certificate forgery and other forms of corrupt practices and I am happy because it is yielding fruits,” he further stated.

He noted that as part of efforts to intensify learning on campus, the polytechnic authority had introduced a method of monitoring academic activities such as opening attendance register for lecturers and ensuring that lecture timetables were religiously followed. According to him, the institution had also awarded over N500 million contracts for the construction of more classrooms, staff offices, internal road network and laboratories to improve facilities for learning.

He said the television and radio stations of the institution would soon commence operation to expose the Mass Communications students to practical terms and also service their entire area, pointing out that contract had been awarded for the renovation of over 1,500-seater auditorium complex at Oko main campus.

The rector said some money had also been set aside to encourage staff of the institution to upgrade their qualifications to, at least, P.hd level before 2012.

He said the institution had encouraged its staff with laptop computers and was now connected to internet; with its portal in place, adding that virtual programme of the institution was coming on board soon. In terms of Internally Generated Revenue, the rector said the institution had established a block industry and cement depot, commenced commercial agriculture programme at Ufuma campus, planned to beef up its transport system as well as begin commercial fishing farming at Atani campus of the institution.

He announced that over 19 widows who are natives of Oko were offered informal employment.

SSS to probe alleged forged certificates at Oko Poly

AWKA — AUTHORITIES of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, says arrangements had been concluded to invite the State Security Service, SSS, to investigate suspected forged certificates in the Institution.

It was gathered weekend, that forged certificates were recently dictated at the records department of the Institution, following a special mechanism put in place by the new administration headed by Prof. Godwin Onu.

Recently, about 88 students of the Institution were expelled for allegedly being in possession of forged results from other Institutions of higher learning in the country, with which they used in gaining admission to do Higher National Diploma, HND, programmes, while six lecturers were suspended in connection with their alleged involvement in questionable behaviour bordering on not following due process.

Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof Onu said weekend, that it was important to involve the SSS in the investigation of suspected certificates for some obvious reasons.

According to him, the Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company had been engaged in the printing of certificates for the Institution to make it difficult for forgery and warned that his administration will not compromise its decision against corruption, insubordinations, extortion, among others.

“We are cleansing and sweeping any thing that will put us in a bad light so that every student from this institution will be able to defend any certificate he or she had acquired and this will make labour market yearn for our products.

“We have put in place effective machinery to check examination malpractice, certificate forgery and other forms of corrupt practices and I am happy because it is already yielding fruits,”
he said.
