I have a smart 5 year old boy who learns fast but I have a problem with his attitude towards his books. He lacks concentration. When it comes to solving mathematics, I mean addition and subtraction, little distraction from anybody or anything will make him lose concentration.

Not that he doesn't know it but he doesn't concentrate. When I give him some questions to solve at home.. Maybe 10 questions he will get the first 4 or 5 and the remaining will be wrong and most times, the ones he misses are simpler than those he got.. Like missing 3-2 and getting 9-4 or something like that.

His last school result was a concern for me even though he improved greatly. When I saw the questions he missed in his maths exam, I knew he knows it. I gave him those questions again and added some, he got all of them right. I gave him another question again while I watch him this time, he was working and he started drumming to the song played from a car passing by the street and when he went back to his work, he missed the remaining questions.. A little distraction alone makes his lose focus and it's a concern for me.

He's a sharp dude even though he's playful.. Very playful but he's very smart

His kid sister doesn't have this issue though.

Please, what else can i do to make my son focus?

It's normal for kids or you expected him to start acting like a matured man Every smart kid is playful.

Look up ADHD and see if his signs are consistent with it.

Well, some things aren't meant to bother you much. I think its normal for a 5year old child.

More like Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder.
If you are worried much, you can take him to sea a paediatrician.

We think one of the hardest things as a parent is not understanding that a child (like an adult) needs a meaningful goal in order to be motivated to do something
Every kid at that age love being pamper with gifts and rewards.
Do that time to time, especially during the questions you give him to solve, promise him something (like candy, chocolate, biscuits and even Barbecue! wink) and see how he gets 9 out of 10 questions everytime.
Goodluck.
Send our LOVE to him from !

At such a tender age, losing focus is normal. Of course he is a kid and hasn't learn about discipline which is why you're there to help mould him into a better person.

When teaching him, don't make it boring. Make it fun and offer rewards at the end of each session..

From my comprehension of your thought process, you want an Einstein out of a 5 year old kid. Wehdone sir.

Take him to China before he's 7 and your wish just might come true. In the words of a very wise man.....

Guide him ....but trust me he will adjust naturally while growing.

I have twin brothers like that. One was book conscious the other was very playful but highly intelligent. Both are brilliant but but the book conscious one always tell us the Kenny is more brilliant. Kenny will work on further maths but missed out the wrong answer or last step while all the working were correct.

When they got to university... with more matured mind on their diploma course to shoot them to university proper...taiwo got 4.8 GPA. Kenny got 5.0.

Kenny would later complete his university with 4.7 GPA while taiwo 4.3 GPA

Cautiously Guide him(pls understand that you will cause more damage if you go extreme)....but he will definitely grow. They always do!

Lack of beating is the cause, beat the hell out of him and watch him change for good. Spare the rod and spoil the child. They are teaching you and you are playing drum, which kind of strong head is that one? A child will not dare do that with me, Simple!

Make him want more, give him a reward system, make him fear failure. My mum made me fear failure that within a short time i achieved much. Distractions are killers to learning development remove them and watch him soar. Play worship songs and classic music to him to stir up the greatness within him.

I think at his age, its not unusual. I mean he's just 5. In many developed countries, you don't even start school proper until 5 or 6 years old. Its in Nigeria, that you see a one year old already in uniforms going to school. Children that still needs play in their lives.

It's cool you've noticed this. Your son might have ADHD(Attention Deficit hyperactivity Disorder). It is not a sickness for his age it is normal and can be treated. If left uncheck it might last a lifetime. Read about it and consult a physician if symptoms persist his age

It baffles me when adult expect children to act like adult.

Rather than thanking God for giving such s wonderful child, you are complaing of through least of problems associated with children of his age..

it's a normal behaviour for a 5-year old 'boy', and almost everyone gets nervous when it comes to exams, no matter how much one has read. You might only need to let him know 'son it's time to read and i dnt want you to be playful'.

Take him to the room for his homework (usually a place with less distractions), you could even let him know you might deprive him frm watching his favourite cartoon. I'm sure he'll come around, he's just a baby.

We sef do pass that one grin

Its called carrot and stick treatment.

He is still a child and needs a reason to do does chores and another not to become overly pampered
So offer him basic gifts like snacks, movies a ball ( in the nearest future)
And yes flog him sometimes so he can develop fear for failure
But let him play because he is a boy and thats part of his education
