The detained Maiduguri Bureau Chief of Daily Trust, Uthman Abubakar, has been released by the military authorities who detained him since Sunday afternoon.

The Editor-in-Chief of Daily Trust, Mannir Dan-Ali, announced the release shortly after speaking to the editor who was brought back to the Maiduguri office by an unnamed Major who handed him over to a Security officer at the office.

Uthman who maintains that he was courteously treated, however, said his mobile phones and laptop are still with the military. They told him that they need time to finish the forensic checks they are carrying out on the equipment.

Tyranny takes no ruler anywhere.

They always have a sad ending.

They tried to bully AI and unicef, but seeing that the international community will slap them mercilessly they bounced on poor Daily Trust because it's a local news agency

Are military men not supposed to be in the barracks? Things are different in Nigeria tho! Here people use soldiers to arrest people; soldiers even arrest policemen in Nigeria.

Hmmm

Now I don't support Sai Baba or Atikulaiton, nor do I support supression of press rights. Daily trust is my fave paper, along with Guardian.

BUT...

I agree with the Army.

For donkey years, most of us Nigerians have been complaining about how saboteurs have been messing up the fight against Boko Haram....

Now, what Daily Trust did was reveal the movements of the Nigerian Army in a time of war....on the eve of a vital operation, which could have jeopardized the operation and led to unnecessary deaths.

That was not right, and that was wrong.

I'm sorry, but you do not reveal EVERYTHING about an army's operation in time of war. Loose lips sink ships.

During WW2, an American Army brigadier revealed some information about the upcoming D day operation of June 6 1994....an operation on which thousands of lives were at stake. For that mistake, the man was demoted to a captain....

If we want this war against Boko to be won, we must not allow the carelessness of a few to jeopardize the lives of the many.

Thanks , and Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

Good development
now the army can focus on their job of defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria and fighting the REAL ENEMY Boko Haram instead of running after unarmed journalists who are just during their job.

Are you kidding yourself....which operation are you talking about. You just contradicted yourself. The duty of the newspaper is to inform the public of govt activities no matter how unfavorable or favorable the govt. It is the carelessness of the army that is jeopardizing the lives of the soldiers by being unable to keep its mission secret to the press. They failed to hide their movements from the press and the press has the freedom to report and print what is actually happening. Shame on Buhari. it is not the press that revealed the military movement, they have to go after their own generals and brigadiers that told the press. And how can an army arrest a civilian in a democracy, which country have you seen such impunity occur? This needs to stop! we're sliding back to the days of the junta and dictactorship and no accountability. What section of the law did the press break. If Daily Trust broke the law, its the civilian attorney general and police who has to investigate and make arrest, not the military. Just because you didn't like what someone said doesn't mean they broke the law.
The Senate must conduct an open hearing on this matter and ask the Buratai who ordered the arrest? under what law? Did the army refer the matter to the attorney general or ministry of Justice? Did they have search warrant? if not, Buratai must be fired and everyone involved in that decision prosecuted for abuse of power.

It pains me alot when people couldn't differentiate between unreasonable excuses & reasonable excuses. For God sake! how could a daily trust newspaper editor publish a military plan on the eve of execution. This is not an excuse, the military should look for another excuse. We all know that, No any newspaper anywhere can be that stupid. If what the military are accusing the daily trust editor is true, then why are they still holding his electronic devices after the plan have already been executed? One day the truth will show up.
