STATE OF MATTER
Matter can exist in three physical states;
Solid state
Liquid state
Gaseous state

SOLID STATE
Various types of solid are formed by different chemical combinations. The molecules, atoms, ions in these solids are very closely parked, and are held firmly by forces of cohesion. The forces of cohesion may be electrovalent, covalent, metallic and the very weak van der waals forces. The strength of any soli is determined by the types of bond and forces binding the crystal structure together.
The cohesive forces binding the particles of a solid are strong enough to restrict their movement so that they are held in fixed positions. These particles can only are held in fixed positions. These particles can only vibrate and rotate about a fixed position but they can not translate, i.e. moves from one place to another. As a result, solids have definite shapes and volumes, and are difficult to compress.
LIQUID STATE
The particles in liquid are slightly apart than those in solid. They have more kinetic energy and are no longer held in position fixed positions. They can vibrate, rotate and translate. Although the particle can slide about randomly, they are still under the influence of the cohesive forces and their movements are restricted. A liquid, therefore, still possesses fixed volume but no definite shape or form. Instead, it assumes the shape of the container in which it is placed. A liquid is is also hard to compress
GASEOUS STATE
In gas, the particles have much more kinetic energy than those in liquid. The cohesive forces in gas are negligible and the particles are free to move about in all direction at great speed, restricted only by the wall of the container. A gas has no definite shape; it occupies the whole volume of its container. Gas particles are relatively far apart and may readily compressed.
