Fairy tales are the World's parables.they are children's stories with an adult
meaning.fairy tales' deeper truths are not immediately visible to a child reader who
enters a world of princesses and monsters; and sees conflicts that are resolved through
nothing more than kisses and tears.but the fairy tales stored up in the mind become
amazing sources of wisdom once the mind matures in young adulthood and beyond,
and comes to realize how the monsters, princes and princesses of the fairy tales are all
represented in the real world by particular groups of people we interact with on a
daily basis.But that's a simplistic view. because Fairy tales are not just the simplifying
of adult relationships for the young mind but fairy tales originally began as adult
stories that existed alongside myths but were sanitized, de - sexualized and cleaned-up
for children's consumption.

Sleeping Beauty, like most fairy tales, is based on themes passed on from before the
time of Christ. themes that existed in various cultures and went through multiple
revisions as the centuries passed. there is a version of the Sleeping Beauty written in
the 1300s about a princess called Zellandine who falls in love with a man named
Troylus who her father sends out on a mission to prove himself as a man before
granting him his daughter's hand.in Trylus's absence Zellandine falls into a magical
sleep upon which on his return Trylus nonetheless has sex with her in her sleep and
she becomes pregnant and in time gives birth---still asleep.it is only her child's
suckling on her finger that wakes her up because it pulls away the thread on her finger
that made her fall into the magical sleep in the first place.

in 1634 the fairy tale reappeared as an Italian story entitled"Sun, Moon and Talia".
(Talia as well as Briar Rose and Princess Aurora are names Sleeping Beauty has used
in the various versions of the fairy tale). The Talia version of the story recounts how a
king had a daughter named Talia who the country's astrologers predicted will fall into
a magical sleep.despite the king's best efforts to prevent it, the prophecy was fulfilled
and Talia fell into a magical sleep. the heartbroken father-king unable to bury her, set
her body in one of the estates and left it there.years later another king out hunting
stumbled upon the house and going inside found the most beautiful girl he ever saw
asleep.her beauty was unlike anything this king had ever seen. after all his efforts to
wake her up failed he was sad.however, he was so overcome by her beauty that he had
sex with her in her sleep.and left.in time, still asleep, she got pregnant and bore twins;
Sun and Moon.and like the earlier version of the story, it was one of the twins
suckling on her fingers that woke her up.this Talia version is however darker and is a
longer story that involves cannibalism as the king's original wife learns of Talia and
seeks to destroy her and her children.

In 1697Charles Perrault rewrote the fairy tale as"Sleeping Beauty" - THE Sleeping
Beauty we all know today. in which a king throws a banquet for her baby daughter
and invites 7 fairies to bless her.however after 6 fairies had blessed her, an 8th fairy,
old and uninvited, turns up and casts a spell on the princess that she would die when
the spindle pricks her finger.horrified, the 7th fairy still to bless the child attempts to
reverse the spell but is only able to partially do so-instead of death the princess will
sleep for 100 years.despite the king's best effort, as a teenager the princess pricks her
finger on a spindle and falls asleep for the 100 years and only awakens when Prince
Charming, from another kingdom finds her and kisses her back to life. sweet.
innocent....not really. its all a metaphor.a parable.
