saxywale:nobody of our generation knows shirley bassey. if you put shirley bassey in a lineup and you ask 20 people to pick her out, i bet you only 2 people will know who she is. even in britain where she had her most fame, no one really knows who she is apart from when she pops up every now and then on shows like the graham norton and jonathan ross show to jog our memory on what she looks like |

Without question Femi Kuti is the most recognised, critically acclaimed, influential and renowned musician from Nigeria today. Tuface and co are popular among nigerians abroad but when organisers of mega jazz and rock festivals like glastonbury and coachella rock festivals are inviting mega bands like U2, Radiohead they always invite Femi to play alongside them. Most of his gigs are outside naija nowadays and they are not small at all. |

saxywale: Same S**T again? She has Nigerian dna, but she aint Nigerian. She's a Brit same goes for Patti Boulaye, Chamillionaire(Although i heard him say he is Nigerian b4), Seal, Sade, Taio Cruz. Wale holds the Nigerian Flag high wherever he goes, That is what i call a Nigerian. mama-gee: Nneka is more famous than Tuface. U rarely see blacks at her concerts. and she fills stadiums and arenas. Tuface cannot even fill a club yet. Even P-Square get more seats than Tuface. and i aint talking outta my arse. Tuface came to Moscow once, performed in a club and almost got whooped by 9ja boys cos he wanted to perform for 15 minutes alone. Nneka is the most popular living Nigerian musican today, Since 2003 Nneka has been working closely with the hip hop beatmaker DJ Farhot, a producer living in Hamburg. As a young singer she first gained public attention in 2004 while performing as an opening act for dancehall reggae star Sean Paul at Hamburg Stadtpark. After much acclaim, Nneka was given a green light to record her first album. After releasing her debut EP 'The Uncomfortable Truth' with the music label Yo Mama's Recording Company, she performed on her first tour with Patrice Bart-Williams in April 2005, playing shows in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. She finished recording her first album in the autumn of 2005. Entitled 'Victim of Truth', it was released not only in Germany but also in England, France, Netherlands, Nigeria and Japan. Garnering rave reviews from the media, the UK's Sunday Times later declared it “the year’s most criminally overlooked album”, comparing it favourably to 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'. Following the release of the album, Nneka enjoyed a sustained and successful period of touring, performing at festivals such as Chiemsee Reggae Summer, Haarlem (BevrijdingsPop), Den Haag (Park Pop) and Saint-Brieuc (Art Rock Festival) as well as in respected venues like La Maroquinerie and New Morning in Paris, Tivoli in Utrecht, Paradiso in Amsterdam and Cargo and ULU in London. She has also supported artists such as Femi Kuti, Bilal, Seeed, and Gnarls Barkley. In February 2008 she released her second album, 'No Longer at Ease'. The title of the album is taken from a novel of the same name by Chinua Achebe and reflects the lyrical content of the record. Most of the songs are political, talking about the plight of the Niger Delta and the corruption in Nneka’s homeland. “No Longer at Ease” combines the political and the personal in “a winning mix of soul, hip-hop an reggae”. The lead single from it, 'Heartbeat', became her first song to break into the German Top 50. In September 2009, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at number twenty. The following months saw tours in France, Italy and Portugal, while she also supported Lenny Kravitz on his French tour in April 2009. Nneka has been nominated in three categories for the 2009 Channel O Music Video Awards, and won an award for Best African Act at the 2009 MOBO Awards. In late 2009, she was chosen as of one Beyond Race Magazine's "50 Emerging Artists," resulting in a spot in the publication's #11 issue (with Bodega Girls and J. Cole on the cover), as well as an exclusive Q&A for the magazine's site. In November of 2009, Nneka staged her first concert tour of the United States where she performed shows in New York City, Vienna (Washington DC), Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Furthermore she was a special guest on The Roots Jam session. Her first US release Concrete Jungle is set for February 2, 2010. Her track 'Kangpe' is also featured as a soundtrack on the EA Sports FIFA 2010 video game. In January of 2010, Nneka appeared in Late Show with David Letterman in New York before getting her US tour underway. In June of 2010, she won the reggae category of the Museke Online Africa Music Award 2010 with her hit song, Africans. She agreed to go on tour with Nas and Damien Marley to help them promote their 'distant relatives' album. She has done a remix of her highly rated track, 'heartbeat' with Nas which is expected to be made public soon. She has also agreed to participate in this year's Lilith Fair Concert (2010) where the likes of Tegan & Sara, Sarah McLachlan, Kelly Clarkson, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Corinne Bailey Rae, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna and others will be performing. She will be performing in Washington, Raleigh and Charlotte (United States). She recorded a song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa called "Viva Africa". It is a tribute to the premier mundial on African soil |

Sade is the most recognisable and famous Nigerian musician around the world. Sade was born in Nigeria and although she left there when she was 4 she has always claimed to be a Nigerian. If you look on youtube you will see interviews where she proudly tells them how to pronounce her full name and what it means. Even if you go to her myspace page, her location is listed as Nigeria even though she really lives in England. In the February issue of Ebony Magazine where Sade graced the cover she says that her favourite food is Egusi soup and recently when an American called her a British Nigerian, she corrected him and said that she was a Nigerian who just happened to have an English mother. I don't think any Nigerian artist has managed to reach number 1 in the charts all over the world and also earn the top awards in the music world like Sade has. Sade also has people like Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Kelly Rowland, Kanye West etc, music stars of today who look up to her and plenty of other people covering her songs. India Arie recently covered No respect to Tuface but he barely scratches the surface of Sade has achieved and so in my opinion he would hardly be classed as an international star. Fela is a Legend in his own right but he was not really a music pop legend like Sade is considered all over the world. Fela was more of a political activist who put his words to music and so that is where is Legend status is based. He was never a big seller in the music world like Sade who has sold over a 100 million records worldwide and is considered to be Britain's most successful female artist. |

YinkaBoy MOST RECOGNISED globally - well Nigerian artists are more diverse than we think. Sade was born in Nigeria but left when she was 4 with her English mother. She did however spend her 21st birthday with her Father and grandmother in Nigeria. Lenny Kravitz mother was NOT a Nigerian. I think her name was Roxi Poker, a Bahamian American who was an actress on the Jeffersons. A simple google search will give you that info. Please get your facts right before posting inaccuracies. |

@YinkaBoy What are Seal's sales figures since you claim he has sold more than Sade? Dizzee Rascal was born and raised in East London. I think his father may have been Ghanaian and his mum from the Carribbean. Again get your facts right. You are making yourself look like an idiot by posting lies. |

Ice Zik I have heard Sade refer to herself as a Nigerian plenty of times even going as far as to correct someone who described her as Nigerian British. She is also referred to as Nigerian sometimes in the British and American press. It the BAND, SADE which is named after the lead singer which is referred to as British. |
Re: Who Is The Most Recognise Nigeria Muscian In The World. by EloSela(f): 12:32pm On Aug 13, 2010 |
buzugee: The question wasn't specifically put to people of your 'generation' Everyone knows who Shirley Bassey is as she is the original James Bond singer. Kanye covered her song Diamonds are forever not too long ago and topped the charts with it. Her songs are also covered on American Idol one of the most popular shows ins American History and has been made a Dame just like Liz Taylor. However I wouldn't consider her a Nigerian as she never knew her Nigerian father who left the family when she was a baby in Wales and I don't think she has ever been to Nigeria before and I have never heard her refer to herself as a Nigerian. Who is this Nneka and ASA people keep going on about and how are they measure as gloabl international artists such as the Beyonce's, Rhiannas, Kanye etc? What charts have they topped? What are their Sales figures, which million dollar blockbuster movie soundtracks have their song appeared in, what is their image, their style? which international magazines covers have they graced? Do tell, by the Sade ticks all of those boxes and more. In the 80s every black girl in America and Britian would wear their hair and paint their lips red like Ms Sade Au |

Sade no contest, the only nigerian artist that I have personally heard interviewed on radio stations in the US,next would be Seal, then far behind would be Wale,Kele Okereke then Chamiliiionaire. The rest you can keep off the list no one would recognise Nneka, tuface,P Square in the US.Period.Nuff said. |

Re: Who Is The Most Recognise Nigeria Muscian In The World. by EloSela(f): 1:44pm On Aug 13, 2010 |
kabukabu: Sade trumps Wale, Kele and Seal. Sade recently topped the charts all over the world including the US with her latest release. In fact she sold over 500k of the latest album in the first week alone. To date the album which was only released in Feb has sold millions around the world. Just because you didn't hear her being interviewed and talked about in the US press it doesn't mean she wasn't. http://fg2bh./2010/02/10/sade-takes-over-american-tv/ http://showhype.com/story/sade-s-soldier-sizzles-at-no-1-on-billboard-200-1/ |

Re: Who Is The Most Recognise Nigeria Muscian In The World. by buzugee(m): 4:08pm On Aug 13, 2010 |
EloSela:hun the question is 'who is the most recognised nigerian musician in the world. ok the average age of people in the world is about 35 years. this means that most of the people in the world are young. the older generation grew up at a period when global access to the media was not possible. this was the era of shirley bassey and as a result, her fame was only concentrated in britain. so even amongst her peers and contemporaries she is not well known all over the world because of the era she grew up in (no internet, no cable tv, no MTV, ) and amongst the young generation, she is not known at all. shirley bassey is a relic of the past. she is one of those people who you might have heard their names once or twice but you do not know who they are, what they did or what they look like. based on that, she is not the most recognizable nigerian. just because her music is sampled or she had a bond song does not make her popular. musicians and producers like kanye west make it their duty to listen to every genre of music so that they can get a song to sample. nothing to do with how famous she was. get it right now |
Re: Who Is The Most Recognise Nigeria Muscian In The World. by EloSela(f): 4:36pm On Aug 13, 2010 |
buzugee: I didn't think Dizee had a Nigerian father because his last name is English, which led me to believe that his father must have been from the Caribbean. Thanks for clearing that up! buzugee: Shirley Bassey is famous all over the world because she is the original James Bond singer and as you know James Bond is not just not concentrated in Britain. Again age and generation has nothing to do with this question otherwise we wouldn't be discussing Fela who is more or less the same age as Shirley Bassey. Is Fela a relic of the past? Please apply some common sense! I don't even consider her Nigerian but there is no doubt that she is very famous. This is a lady that sells out Vegas without any problems without fail and was recently inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. |
Re: Who Is The Most Recognise Nigeria Muscian In The World. by buzugee(m): 5:15pm On Aug 13, 2010 |
EloSela:hun once again you are blinded by your drive to drive your point across. is shirley bassey famous ? yes but only amongst old ancient and archaic people that go to vegas where she does shows. being a bond singer is not a lofty feat. dunno why you keep bringing that up. no matter how you slice and dice it, NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW WHO SHIRLEY BASSEY IS. the kind of music she sang was niche music not universal. her music appealed to the upper class in the fifties. she was into all these elegant, ballroom music type thangs. how many people listened to or listen to that ? get it right now. how many people in the world today or back in the day listen to this crap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmOCDc3xLCs&feature=related . its niche music. get it right woman |
Re: Who Is The Most Recognise Nigeria Muscian In The World. by EloSela(f): 5:22pm On Aug 13, 2010 |
^^^^ You don't speak for everyone in the world and so you can't say who or who does not listen to that sort of musci. Shirley Bassey does Cabaret theatre style music, the genre that made Liza Minelli, Barry Manilow and Sinatra famous all over the world. Furthermore if no one listened to that sort of music there wouldn't be radio stations dedicated to it and it wouldn't be taught in colleges around the world. There also wouldn't be sell out shows on Broadway and London's theatreland because that is the sort of music that is played there, not your Lil Wayne's and Wale, lol!!! As I said if Shirley is a relic of the past then the same can be said for anyone star over 60. With your logic you come across like a 16 year old. is that how old you are? |
Re: Who Is The Most Recognise Nigeria Muscian In The World. by buzugee(m): 5:31pm On Aug 13, 2010 |
EloSela:while you come across as a dunce. you are one of these retards that gets a silly idea in their head and then take it for gospel. remember i am the one who told you that dizzie rascal is nigerian after you already told someone off for saying he was nigerian ? you would have stuck to your guns and lambasted the guy if i had not pulled out the proof that he was. then you stuck your tail between your legs in shame and recanted. you remember that ? yeah thats how much you know about music. you are a stubborn dummy who needs to be slapped with proof before you get off your silly horse. SHIRLEY BASSEY IS NOT THAT FAMOUS. deal with it. shirley bassey is a relic of the past not because of her age but because of the type of music she sang. nobody listens to liza minelli and barry manilow. they are laughing stock. people laugh at them. thats the point i am trying to make to you. the kind of music they sing is laughable to about 90 percent of the population of the world. fortunately for them ? the 10 percent that matter (rich white old people) are the ones who control the media. thats the only reason you hear about shirley bassey or barry manilow once in a while |
