The Code of Conduct Tribunal has raised a panel to try Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Walter Onnoghen, who is accused of lying in his asset declaration.

The tribunal on Saturday announced that corruption charges had been raised against Mr Onnoghen and the trial will commence on Monday.

The case is built on a petition filed by a civil society group, Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.

The petition dated January 7, 2019, accuses Mr Onnoghen of managing several accounts through which has been making transfers of local and foreign currencies in “a manner inconsistent with financial accuracy,” the petition signed by the group’s executive secretary, Denis Aghanya, said.

In its statement, the CCT said the trial “was consequent to application filed by the Code of Conduct Bureau to the CCT Chairman yesterday for the trial to commence against the Chief Justice of Nigeria on six count charges”.

“The application was filed yesterday by the operatives of CCB, dated 11st January, 2019 and signed by Musa Ibrahim Usman (Esq) and Fatima Danjuma Ali (Esq), containing 6 count charges all borders on non declaration of asset,” a statement signed by Ibraheem Al-Hassan, head of press and public relations of CCT, said.

A three-member panel led by Justice Danladi Umar will commence the trial on Monday at its courtroom, situated at the headquarter, along Jabi Daki Biyu, Saloman Lar way, Abuja, at about 10:00 a.m.

This officially marks the end of democracy in nigeria. Any candidate hoping to seek redress in court after election should forget it. Buhari truly VOWS TO WIN win he surely will by hook or crook but reign he shall not. It looks like he will be a candidate for DIVINE DISGRACE. God help him. Desperation makes flies follow the corpse to the grave.

The speedy with which this government is pursuing this alleged case of a prominent but non hausa-fulani/ cabal member of this government in person of the Chief Justice status simply shows the grand design to ease him out.

Buhari never publicly decleared his assets as he promised in his scam.A whole AGF-have committed many legal & criminal altercation but no action have been taken against him.Maina, Kemi Adeosun, Obanikoro, OUK are yet to face justice under the coven of criminal saints.

Shut up and shut down!

So, the alleged breach should be overlooked? If Onnogen is not guilty of the allegation, he should defend himself.

So The Petition Was Even Filed By An IPOB Yoot after all..?

(Dennis Aghanya
)

Any this is my position:

That is close to 500 Million Naira, he refused to declare if you summed everything up...What other business is he doing aside being a civil servant?

No wonder some criminals are now using the Supreme to Court boast, like Saraki etc, because they are sure of buying Judgements....

Corruption in Judiciary is the highest form of crime against humanity...Because a corrupt judge is a danger and a terrorist to the entire society..

This is a case I advise the FG to diligently prosecute to serve as a deterrent to other criminal justices littering our Judiciary...

Kudos to Buhari for not toleranting crime (in order appear good in some people's mind), no matter how highly placed the individual might be.

#SayNoToCorruption.

If you had a semblance of functioning brain, you’d realize that Ganduje enjoys immunity which prevents his prosecution. It’s the same way one of your lords Fayose couldn’t be investigated nor prosecuted while he was governor.

Onnoghen is obviously partisan but I don’t support this obvious attack on his person. This is ill advised and the timing is very wrong. FG couldn’t convict Saraki, they won’t get a conviction against Onnoghen. The bench will rally around their own in a show of judicial solidarity.

It doesn't matter the weight of the allegation? Have seen the full charges as reported by the Premium Times?

Are you saying all the SANS in Buhari's govt are not wise by instituting a case, they knew, would fail?

Are you saying they didn't take care of the loopholes mentioned by the partisan Justice in Saraki's case?

Are you saying Walter Onnoghen will not recuse himself from presiding over the supreme Court affairs pending his acquittal by the Tribunal?

If yes to the last paragraph, who do you think will sit in his supposedly biased court?

I may be wrong but I don’t see Onnoghen recusing himself from presiding over Supreme Court affairs till his case is decided.

Like I wrote earlier, Onnoghen is obviously partisan. Same goes to justice Mary Odili and other Supreme Court justices appointed by PDP presidents. However, I would have preferred this suit to be instituted after the election. Doing this before the election will only heighten political tension and discredit the intention of the government.
