Nigeria remained rooted at the 30th position of the FIFA world ranking for the month of August. And after their 2-1 loss to South Korea yesterday, the Eagles may take a further deep in the September rankings.

There were no significant changes in the August rankings, which saw Egypt rated number nine in the world maintaining their number one spot in African, while 23rd placed Ghana is second in Africa. Cote Ivoire, Nigeria and Algeria made up the top five in African.

World champion Spain stayed atop the FIFA rankings and the United States dropped five places in the top 20 despite not playing a match.

Spain leads World Cup runner_up the Netherlands, with Brazil third and Germany fourth. The top 10 were unchanged after only two international matches involving lesser_ranked teams were played worldwide in the past month.

However, the U.S. fell to No. 18 because its four wins at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July 2009 dropped in value.

FIFA has amended the complex formula—which ranks teams on results over four years—to give more value to matches played in three confederations.
FIFA said the changes were made based on results at the last three World Cups, and they will take effect for the next cycle leading to the 2014 finals in Brazil.

The September rankings will take account of more than 50 friendlies decided on Wednesday, and qualifiers for continental championships in Europe and Africa.

Surprised we are still rank 30th, which is not our true position. Nigeria should be hovering around 40 to 50 on that table. When favouritism overtake merit, this is what you get. Nonsense!
