theoldpretender: GOOD! And after the coup ousted and got Hausa and Yoruba politicians killed in gruesome manner, and Ibo man, Agui Ironsi emerged as the military head and issue decree 34 which cancelled the semi autonomous regional structure and imposed unitary system on Nigeria. After that, Ironsi appointees were majorly igbos and that further fuelled fear of domination among other ethnic groups especially the Northerners that led to counter coup. 6 Likes |

Biodun556:Yes you are right, even my late uncle admitted that some of their fellow coupist made mistakes in the coup execution and Aguiyi Ironsi too made mistake. You are right. They had good intentions initially but failed to implement their plan well which cost Igbos a lot too; Igbos paid the price of the wrong execution of that first coup of 1966 7 Likes 2 Shares |

Foodforthought: That is my exact thought. The guy is building a serious movement. I watched one documentary on Adolf Hitler. He started building his movement in late 1920s with nothing, under 15 years he built a very wicked congregation called Nazi party, if not for President Rosvelt of US, Churchill of UK and Stalin of Russia, only God knows what Hitler would have done to the world. Nigeria need to get her act right. Time is running out. Enough of nepotism, marginalization. There is a very big need to unite this Nation, let brothers be as one. But if things continue the way they are, they will continue fueling this guys Enough word of advice 6 Likes 1 Share |

franchasng: SIR AHMADU BELLO'S (Sardauna) XMAS MESSAGE TO NORTHERN CHRISTIANS IN 1959 We are people of many different races, tribes and religions, who are knit together by common history, common interests and common ideals. Our diversity may be great but the things that unite us are stronger than the things that divide us. On an occasion like this, I always remind people about our firmly rooted policy on religious tolerance. Families of all creeds and colour can rely on these assurances. We have no intention of favouring one religion at the expense of another. Subject to overriding need to preserve law and order, it is our determination that everyone should have absolute liberty to practise his beliefs. It is befitting on this momentous day, on behalf of my ministers and myself, to send a special word of gratitude to all Christian missions. Let me conclude this with a personal message. I extend my greetings to all our people who are christians on this great feast day. Let us forget the difference in our religion and remember the common brotherhood before God, by dedicating ourselves afresh to the great tasks which lie before us. 3 Likes |

Biodun556:Forget what leaders say, pay attention to what they do. In life, don't listen to what people say, believe what they do. Buhari for instance write even more, but his actions shows he is a tribal religious bigot, and Islamic extremist and reason why all the northern Almajiri love him, nothing more. They hate Atiku because Atiku is not a tribal religious bigot ready to kill and undermine other tribes and religion to please Northern Muslims, that's the only reason they don't love Atiku as much. If Atiku start attacking Christians and condemning Christians while supporting every Muslim extremism, you will see Northerners start to follow him massively, its their way. They deserve to have their own Islamic nation and practice Islam their way without disturbance from any other tribe or religion, but due to long throat for crude oil, they refuse to seek for their own independent Islamic nation 11 Likes 4 Shares |

IbrahimDamola: Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna, who was the leader of the coup, went to the home of Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari (who was the Commanding Officer of the Second Brigade) and personally shot him. This was despite the fact that he was one of his most trusted officers and confidantes, and despite the fact that earlier that evening he had attended a cocktail party in his house. After killing Maimalari, Ifeajuna went to Ikoyi Hotel, where Lt. Col. Abogo Largema, who was the Commander of the Fourth Battalion in Ibadan, was staying and he personally shot and killed him too. After that, both he and Major Donatus Okafor, another of the mutineers, abducted Sir Tafawa Balewa, the Prime Minister, from his home and took him to the Officers Mess at Dodan Barracks. Once it was clear to them that the coup was unraveling they fled from Dodan Barracks, drove to the Lagos-Abeokuta road, shot the Prime Minister and then dumped his body in a bush. The Special Branch reports show that both Ifeajuna and Okafor shot Tafawa Balewa at point blank range in the head and body. 6 Likes |

The evil old man should just shut up; if they had not intervened and disrupted our nascent democracy, Nigeria would have been a better place today. What corruption, when their main targets; the Sardauna and the prime minister hardly had any assets: mere modest houses/farms each and almost empty bank accounts? What nepotism, when most of the appointed positions made by the prime minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (including all the service chiefs) were filled by Igbos? What Jihad? How could the Sardauna have waged jihad on the whole country when he as the premier of northern region had control and influence over only ONE out of the FOUR existing regions at the at time? Blatant lies and excuses for their evil deeds Their motivation for the coup was clearly tribal and regional hatred fuelled by individual and collective bloated egos - they just couldn't stand the fact that those they were looking down upon as inferiors were in charge. If the plotters were truly patriotic and their mission was to rid the country of all the evils they claimed; then why didn't they come up with any vision or blue print plan to address the said problems when they took over, beyond their short sighted goal of the lopsided killings of mostly northern leaders? No matter how much they try to twist the truth or re-write history; they cannot remove the facts that: the coup was an Igbo coup; planned and executed by mainly Igbos; which targeted only non-Igbos; Igbos stood to benefit and indeed benefited most from it. In order to consolidate power to themselves; they interrupted our nascent democracy; dismantled the regional system of government and replaced it with the unitary system we have inherited today - which had since been the bane of this country; yet they are the ones at the forefront of those calling for restructuring while blaming northerners for the very problem they caused themselves. 13 Likes 1 Share |

franchasng: Being paranoid causes tension even among family members. Intolerance and unnecessary suspicion brings nothing but destruction and that was what really happened. Awolowo and Akintola feud had no religious coloration neither was it caused by Northern politicians. Tafawa Balewa govt merely took advantage of that to divide and weakened the opponents which is understandable in politics. Infact ever since, this is first time i see someone linking Nigeria political crises in the first republic to religion and it is ludicrous and baseless. 2 Likes |
