Internet of Things is revamping all the industries on the globe. The automotive industry has always been a vertical that has been talked about as evolution never stops. There is always a scope of increasing the level of personalisation, performance and ease of operation in automotive IoT. In earlier times, owning a car was luxury, now is the time that extensive research and innovation has not let autonomous cars to be termed as a luxury too. The baseline of all these developments is the interaction between the physical objects like sensors, connectors, controlling or receptive hub of the car to the internal software system.

Automakers and OEMs have been in a continuous phase of development in respect to delivering enhanced user experience. Here are the trends as per which the automotive sector is evolving:

Intelligent Personal Assistant

Digital personal assistant is an intelligent spin-off in communication-based on machine learning and artificial intelligence. The personal assistant takes commands from the driver or passenger, processes instructions and performs the actions as instructed. It can connect with the driver’s mobile and transfer controls to the personal assistant, thus eliminating the use of the phone while driving. This application of IoT for the automotive industry has made driving safer.

CaaS

Cars-as-a-Service is a concept that is being introduced by several companies. A company owning a feat of cars can start this service wherein all the cars are connected to a central hub. Any driver in need of a car can book or schedule their ride from the connected car sharing portal. The person can walk to the pickup point, unlock the car with a digitally secure pin and drive the car to the destination and securely process the payment digitally in the end.

Cloud-based Driver Profile

The driver can create their profile on a cloud-based platform. It is a source where all drivers can sign in. The platform stores data all the personalised data like driver preferences language according to your driver, seat temperature, infotainment screen layout, favourite GPS destinations, or payment card information. On signing in, the car’s dashboard will transform into the settings as customised by the driver.

V2V and V2X Connectivity

Vehicle to mobile device connectivity is now available in multiple automotive systems. The OEMs are developing automotive IoT Solutions that facilitate V2V and V2X connectivity. HARMAN Connected Services, in their showcase at CES 2019 has launched Vehicle to Vehicle connectivity, by virtue of which, connected cars can communicate with each other. Not only does it helps in increasing the level of autonomy in the cars, but also prevents from unwanted breakdown or natural calamities.

In the launch, the company brought out this feature with reference of snowfall in a particular area. A car traveling in snow cover road when elevated to a particular height can transmit the height of elevation of the car and the wheels to save the temperature sensitive elements from breaking down.
