Season one Could this be love? Episode 1 Half way to John's place I took to a treeshade along the road. My skin had been burning in the hot rays beaming from the sky. My handkerchief couldn't take more fluid as I made attempt to wipe my face. I hissed glancing at my armpits and chest region; my shirt had changed from skyblue to navyblue. My heart flipped as I took a quick step backwards and yelled, "Na road be this!" A motorcycle had just rode past me, stirring the warm air against my face. As if that wasn't enough he turned back and showed me his middle finger. *Crazy guy!* My face tightened and just before he turned, I whirled my right forefinger in circles around my ear, gesticulating my inner voice to him, then I turned only to see that my toes had just missed the tyres of another motorcycle. It was then I noticed the large potholes residing in the middle of the road. *I'd better leave before I become the newest patient at Igbobi* (a popular orthopedic hospital) *But why is everywhere so hot today? Well my mother would be the last person to stop cooking with firewood.* flashes of smiles surged out of my face as I remembered the numbers of kerosene stoves I had sent to her in the village. *Come to think of it, is kerosene not carbon as well?* I chuckled. *Mehn this climate change fight is a joke.* I wiped the mass of dust that had coated my face, then I reversed out of the tree shade, whined down two buttons of my shirt, adjusted my belt, geared my legs ready and zoomed off. My names were Taylor Segundo. Please don't think I'm a Ghanaian or worst, a Togolese. There was a reason behind the combination of names. Anyways, I lived in Lagos. should I just say I was from Lagos because I'd lived most of my life there? Well, this most populous black city held most of my memories; the ones I wished never happened and the ones I cherished. Standing six feet tall, people called me Tallest, a name that made my face go shapeless at the sound of it. "Don't ever in your life call me that name again! " you would hear me smeared most times. But is six feet too tall? My mirror told me 'No' whenever I stood to ask in front of it, but it would go further to answer what I never asked; I was extremely slim. A social media friend had once called me a bag of bones but I swallowed it up because he was giving me hope of moving to America someday, an illusion that I never knew and was ready to take more trash for the greener pasture. Squatting with my big brother and his family in a single room apartment was like a time bomb only counting to explode me. tbc. |

Episode 2 His four kids and wife would sleep on the bed while my brother and I would take the little space on the floor cut out by the mattress, arranged like packed fishes in a tin can. In the mornings, we woke up joints stifened while the mattress would leave it's occupants with some strands of it glued to their hair. I worked twelve hours per day, six days a week and sometimes would be compelled to work for seven days. Working straight twelve hours wasn't a joke as I spent my days in the factory only to sleep at home. What home am I talking about? Our bungalow had over twenty five rooms with ten rooms in the main building and fifteen surrounding it, cutting out only the face of the house. it had only one toilet, bathroom and kitchen, and till now, I didn't know all my neighbors but could tell that cracked up house with sagging ceilings was a confluence of many tribes as different accents and languages would echo from the narrow passage whenever there was a landlord-tenant meeting. A lot of meetings had been held concerning a particular woman in her nineties. Here was the petition against her: she littered the bathroom with her stool. It wasn't until the last meeting that most of got to know she was the landlord's aunt, the reason for her indemnity. Then we just had to pray she returned home quickly to her maker since she would always groan in a doddering voice, "what will I go to the village to do at this my age? " when ever she was being advised to. I'd spent six months already but still not used to the bad smell oozing from the opened drainage in front of the colourless building. Don't get it twisted, I wasn't from the rich but that place was something else. Finally, the seeming endless journey came to an end; I was at John's place. I didn't take me much time to wipe my face, then plodded into the gloomy passage. "where could could this guy be eh? " I moaned when I couldn't see his sleepers at the door post. I held my hands on my waist and breathed heavily before throwing light punches on the wooden door. An unfamiliar voice answered and propped the door partly opend from inside so that only her face and upper ridges were visible. My eyes widened at the sight but quickly I withdrew the gawk. "Hi, is John in? " I asked. "No, in the bathroom. " Just then, John appeared, wrapped in bath towel he dropped the bucket in his hand and moved closer. "Sup, Ty?" he said, "you're here already?" *No, I'm in US* I sighed. He took the lead and I followed behind him into the demacated one room apartment. I sat on a single-seater, waiting for an introduction, but it never happened. John was busy fitting into clothes at the other part of the room separated by curtains. I raised my head slowly and rested my eyes on the girl. She was neither bursty nor slim, she'd no curves neither was she straight. She was in the in the class of girls I referred to as 'LAportable '. Her oval face was spotless, radiating and flashy. I saw her teeth when she smiled to her phone's screen, they were white and well arranged. Trying to look closer, John came in and I withdrew my eyes. I knew John caught my stares. Tbc 1 Like |

Episode 3 John could tell what I was going through, he knew how much of an introvert I was. We've been together since we were nine or ten and together we've climbed hills and tress. Starting a conversation with a stranger was a big problem for me. But John was the opposite of me, he got more of the girls. "Ehen Ty, this is Kate, my girlfriend's younger sister. " John said, finding himself a seat. Hearing that, my heart flipped two beats. "Kate, this is my cousin, Taylor, he's a writer. " *huh! * I turned to give John a weird look. *is this dude trying to mock me or what? Fine! I told him I was writing a book but I never told him I had finished. I was still in chapter one and had even abandoned it. This nigga had just trampled on my reputation before this chick,* I smirked. "Hi, Kate, " I said. "Hello," She replied without giving her phone a break. "Is that how you two are going to greet? " John said with a crocked smile. "ooo, John leave me alone na." Kate finally lifted her eyes from her phone and rested them on me. At this point I swear I could feel her pure white eyes peering into my soul. It was then I noticed that my red shirt had turned pink at the neck, and my dusty legs. My unkempt beards started inching me. I could only hide my face in my phone; trying to view pictures on free facebook as the room suddenly became hot. John could have helped start a conversation but he didn't. His silence sprang up two thoughts in me; it was either John was rolling with the girl or he didn't want me to roll with her. I knew he liked girls but to roll with two sisters, I still wasn't sure. Few minutes later Rita came in, holding two groceries bags, and it was then I realized that Kate wasn't close to being a shy girl as she started a loud gist with her sister. Shortly after, the left the room to the kitchen I guess as I could still hear their Voices, eavesdropping on them. The last thing my ears picked before John distracted me with a funny facebook picture was, "It's him I was telling you about na." I needed no prophet to tell me they were referring to me. "Hey John," I tapped on his shoulder. "That girl is really pretty. " I avoided using 'beautiful' because Adaora had told me the difference between beautiful and pretty. "Yeah," John replied without looking at me. "Can I approach her? " "If you wish. " John's coldness got me thinking. "Or is she not a good girl? " "Guy, that girl moves with too many dudes" "Really? That's not good." Yeah and sometimes she sleeps out." "Damn. Thought she only came for a visit." "No, she'd been here for a year now, a month after you left." "Don't know why pretty girls are always like that." "She's worst." That conversation further reduced my enthusiasm. I hadn't been lucky with pretty girls and had started jinxing them. I avoided them like a plague because there was an expected disappointment in every try. But this one, I thought I had a tribal advantage. Kate and her sister were of my tribe. "I need one thousand Naira to complete my transport fare to ajah, anyone help pleader!" Kate shouted as she turned the door knob from outside. *my o my! I actually came to John for the same purpose, what an unfortunate coincidence, why today that my pockets are dry?* John wasn't helping as he had however remained reticent about my presence as if we never discussed about money on phone before my arrival. Kate now in the middle of the room flickering her gaze from John to me, shouting she needed help. Tbc....... 1 Like |
