It is a popular expression that what ever a mind conceives, it can achieve. This expression is entirely true because what ever invention, discoveries and system we live in; was first conceived in the mind before it was actualized.
Neurologists till date, still believes that human beings make use of less than 5% of their brain power in their lifetime. Isn’t this a funny data? That is to say that great minds like Isaac Newton, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein and other great inventors whose works greatly shaped humanity, didn’t even utilize up to 5% of their brain power.

This begs the question. What is the full capacity of the brain?
Well, I guess nobody really knows. It leaves me with this conclusion that the human brain is in fact a miracle.
While we always motivate ourselves with the expression “what ever a mind conceives, it can achieve”; which is very true. There is one important factor we often do not recognize; a key ingredient that backs the above statement in quotes.
The need to have a right team: A team that shares a common goal with you; a team that will be instrumental to actualizing that which your brain has conceived.
That is why so many have mind blowing ideas but fail to realize them, either because they wanted to do it alone or they had the wrong team. These popular quotes; “No Man Is An Island,” “If You Want To Go Fast, Go Alone But If You Want To Go Far, HAVE THE RIGHT PEOPLE.” These quotes portray how interwoven we all are with each other.

Sadly, we have been bitterly divided along racial, tribal and religious lines. But it still does not rule out the fact that great minds that effected great change in our society had a team behind them.
Your team starts with your immediate family, it could be a church group, friends, mentors, teachers; they all come in different forms but share a common goal, to actualize what you carry in your mind.

In this article, I will be examining the life of Dr Ben Carson, how mind power worked for him and the teams he had at every point in his life.

THE LIFE OF DR BEN CARSON:
Growing up with the kind of background Benjamin Carson had, he would be termed a disadvantaged child; at least that was what the society saw him as. A child who struggled with his grades in school, that failure seemed normal to him. Society had sentenced him and him being a struggling child, he also sentenced himself.
Know this: if the society sentences you a failure, it is not a problem. The real problem is when you sentence yourself.
In his early life, the first team Ben had was his mother; Sonya Carson. Note that Sonya Carson never had a formal education. She lived in foster care homes, got married at the age of 13 to an already married man with kids; unknowingly to her. Their life was characterized by struggles, which was typical of black families at the time.

Despite what we would term disadvantaged situation, Sonya Carson against all hope, never stopped believing and went the extra mile to see that her son possessed all that that is needed to rise beyond their present situation. She was resilient in making sure this was realized, even when it wasn’t sufficient to sustain them both comfortably.
For a woman who couldn’t read, she made Ben and his brother Curtix cut down on hours spent watching the Television and made them go to the library and read two books every week, which they would write a report on and present to her. This was a team member who believed in the potentials of her young sons.
Soon Ben's grade started to improve in school, he went from having F’s to D’s and eventually became an ‘A’ student. One would ask how Sonya Carson managed to push Ben to start realizing his potentials. Sonya Carson might not have a formal education but she was a keen observer.
While working as a cleaner for a white man who happened to be learned, she discovered he had a lot of books in his home. The man read more and didn’t watch the TV much. So she concluded that successful people do not watch the TV often and in some cases, not at all.
That was the first step she took with her sons!
As a mother she didn’t just identify that Ben had potentials; she became his team, his support system to make sure these potentials aren’t buried but blossom someday.

So many individuals we classify as failures aren’t entirely so, the seed was in them but the right team wasn’t there to help them actualize their potentials. We all need a support system to function at optimum capacity.
Where did the team of Ben and his mum get him?
Firstly, it got him a scholarship to Yale University; to study medicine. Then he finished from Yale and got an internship at Johns Hopkins.
Mind you, Johns Hopkins selects two interns every year but Ben's confidence got him a spot.

THEN THE MIRACULOUS!
Another part of Ben’s life I will be looking at is the ground breaking separation of the Siamese twins (twins joined at birth). Ben had been outstanding at Johns Hopkins which earned him accolades. But the peak of his career was the case of the Siamese twins, being just 3 years in practice. Similar surgeries in the past had seen just one of the twins survive. But Ben was determined to keep the two alive. He knew it was possible; he just needed to stretch his mind.
His first team member, his Mum; always told him that all he needed, was inside of him. Eventually the idea came. At that time, it hadn't been tested but he was confident of a successful outcome.

The two notable things are: that he had a way out and secondly he needed the right team of doctors to work with in other to achieve this. He assembled a group of doctors of different specialties, practiced the procedures over and over before the day of the surgery. This brings us to: HAVING THE RIGHT TEAM!
He demonstrated that though you are a guru in a field, nothing beats adequate preparation as well as the right team.
The separation of the Siamese twins was successful largely because he had the right team, whose goal aligned with that of Ben Carson.

In conclusion, I will say that having an idea is superb, but you need to get the right team or support systems. Everybody needs one!

Always remember, “Where There Is a Will, There Is A Way...but you must HAVE THE RIGHT TEAM also”.
