Minimum Wage: Labour Waits For Senate As Reps Approve N30,000 by whathappens: 8:16am On Jan 31, 2019
THE legislative backing over the battle for the actualisation of N30,000 new minimum wage by Organised Labour, has been given a major boost after members of the House of Representatives, at their Tuesday sitting set the new National Minimum Wage as N30,000.

Labour will now shift its battle and lobby to the Senate for it to concur with the House of Representatives.

Once the Senate passes the N30,000 minimum wage Act into law, both chambers will harmonise if there are differences before returning the act to the president for assent.

Recall that members of the House reached the decision on the N30,000 a day after conducting a public hearing on the bill for a new national minimum wage.

The truth of the matter is that even the 30k is too small as a minimum wage in a country where legislatures 'earned' far more than what obtains virtually anywhere in the world. And sadly also, the 30k must be debated upon. Imagine!

It's one thing for the minimum wage to be approved, It's another thing for the states to be able to pay 30k. More backlog of salaries will be owed by some states this year. Nigeria needs diversification from oil and the allowances and salaries of our greedy leaders need to be slashed.

The house of representatives is inconsequential and wastage since their law can not have effect without the Senate's assign to the law be t the Senate can deliberate on motion and pass it as law without the green chamber.
