While many people are currently working, some of them lack the skills needed to be in the position where they currenty are. While some are overqualified for the jobs they currently have and are said to be underemployed.

Wait a minute, while should someone be qualified and others should be under-qualified. Is it because of education, maybe but it is to be noted that most job seekers these days are master holders already in a bid to improve the chances of being employed. Perhaps it is vocational skills, but no we are not talking about that here. Then what makes most qualified, most under-qualified and few over-qualified? The answer is not far fetch if you read the header of this article. It is the skill they possess.

Skill is defined as the ability to do something well. It shows that you are equipped well enough to perform some tasks or assignment because you have acquired the expertise to do those stuffs. While we are not here to belittle some skills, we will be biased to pick some skills here because those are some of the skills that some of us know or are aware of and have either acquired them or about to acquire them.

Nigeria is so blessed with human resources that most Nigerians outside the country are actually leaders in the field where they are. But why is it that Nigerians in Nigeria are said to be unemployable by Nigerians whereas other Nigerians outside of Nigeria are overqualified for most jobs they do unless we want to down play their capability?

Well, the answer is here. The answer is skills. Most Nigerians are not flexible unless they are forced to. In schools, work is said to be done when movement occurs. I might not have defined it the way it is
written in textbook but I am sure I will be marked right by any qualified science teacher who knows what work is.

There are a lot of skills that you can actually learn but it is best to learn only one at a time. This is because, it is best to be master of a skill than knowing many without being able to use the skill the way it should be.

We will discuss some skills that we believe that most people can do and be sure that their jobs are secured.

Software Development: While we will not talk about mobile development in this segment, we will definitely talk about website development. Software development is a wide field that will be relevant till a long time. Examples of people that work in this segment includes: Graphics designers, programmers, project managers, SEO experts etc. While it might take a very long time to be a professional in whatever aspect one takes. It is to be noted that people in this field are paid heavily and they have flexible working hours depending on the company or individual they work for. While it is very possible that most of them do not pay tax, we advise that Nigerians who will be or are in this field should please start paying taxes in other to develop Nigeria as this is a major source of income for government. Things like programming language, framework, Content Management System etc are common terminologies that are being used in this field.

Cybersecurity: While many people are yet to discover the gold in Software development in Nigeria, it appears that cybersecurity makes the gold of Software Development to look like bronze in front of a jewellery expert. This is expected because people will always take security as the most important thing in any project. It has been jokingly said by some experts that if World War III is to be happen which we do not hope to happen, it will be fought on cyberspace which is going to be the battleground. People that can fight will include hackers, network administrators, etc. Leaving the joking part, no one will love their data to be stolen as data breach is not a desired event. In fact, those good in this area are consultants for many big companies. It is believed that FaceBook pays $5,000 for a bug discovered by anyone and that they employ the best guys to help protect their application. Things that people in this field will get use to will include terminologies like Linux which happens to be an Operating System just like Windows but used by people in that field, Kali a version or flavour of Linux, terminal where you can make or mar devices including yours if you do not know what you are doing there, it is said that Network Engineers are also next door neighbors to these guys. While many people see those in this field as bad guys, it is to be noted that they are actually the good guys and are they are like cops that are to sent to infiltrate the bad guys camps.

Video Editing: While YouTube happens to be the second most visited website in the world after Google that owns both of them, it is to be noted now that the new way of learning is now video. It is said that to hid something from a man, put it in a book but it appears that only worthless materials are kept in books these days. Everything is being made in a video, from how to eat a banana to how to build google everything appears to be on this platform. Since a lot of videos are on this platform, the best videos are given preference by the customers that will eventually use them. This is one of the reasons why video editors are needed. Video editors are also needed in advertising companies, and are core members of any social media team of any brand. Before the internet was popular in this part of the world, some Chinese movies and Indian movies happens to have a lot of film tricks like we use to say then but we never knew it was the works of video editors.

Communication: Learning to communicate effectively is the most important skill in a communication driven-economy, and it is one of the top skills that employers are looking for. While you might think there is no money in this field, I wish to say there is more than enough in this and I will not love to debate this because that is not the purpose of this article. Communication seems to be hard to a lot of people. Communication includes how to respond and write an email message, using social media, LinkedIn, how to pass messages to other people. It is said that Alexander the Great killed one of his mentor pupils who was with him during one of his military campaign. While the pupil must be very brilliant for him to attend to a king, it appears he never had this skill or he was tutored a little in this field. There are alot of motivational speakers who are paid to talk at programmes and events. Those handling social media account of organisations happen to be very good communicators.

If there is any skill you can learn or acquire this year, it must be this skill as it’s importance cannot be overemphasized.
Financial Skills

Financial Skills: While many people do not see this as a skill, it seems it is this skill that differentiate two people who have the same income per annual yet one seems to be poor while the other happens to be rich. Financial skills involves making the right decision. It involves learning how to make important decisions like taking safe risk investment, purchasing luxurious goods only when one can afford it, buying more of assets rather than liabilities. While this might happen to be the hardest to teach skill, it appears that this skill is needed every now and then and one can not do without it for one to be successful.
