The resident electoral commissioner in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Mike Igini, has assured that the commission is prepared to conduct credible elections in the state but lamented that politicians were planning to infiltrate the recruitment of ad-hoc staff for selfish reasons.

According to him the desperation of politicians in the state showed the level of resistance to public good and change.

Speaking with our correspondent today in Uyo, the state capital, Igini, however said their plot was not going to work adding that the commission would conduct rigorous screening exercise for all the ad-hoc staff. “What you see around here are auxiliary staff, people who are going to be employed as auxiliary staff to provide auxiliary services during the election.

“Politicians are coming to drop them in their party buses, we have our securities all over the place, we see them. A few of them because we have a portal, an open portal, so what they have done is go and register their people as ad-hoc workers for the commission.

“This not is going to work, we are going to drop all of them, this shows that the level of resistance to public good in the state is enormous”. Igini said.

He said with over 8,000 Corpers in the state, the commission can conveniently deploy to handle sensitive duties in the 2,980 polling units in the state.

Igini said,” what the politicians don’t know is that the auxiliary staff would merely be assigned to work as polling orderlies.”

According to him, Nigerians should be concerned about the attitude of politicians whom he said are all out to scuttle the electoral process in the country through vote buying and not the commission. “What we should be concerned is the plan by our politicians to undermine the democratic process in the country, the vote buying that is going on, the electorate are betraying the commission, selling their votes to politicians, this is very sad”, he said.

He wondered why responsible people like the politicians could be the ones doing the wrong things in the country, adding that election ought to be a period of joy and celebration for everyone to exercise his or her civil responsibilities but it is a different thing all together in Nigeria.
