Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by naso2(m): 7:32pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
In actual sense , the alternative route is what Govt should have built and tolled. What is socialist in demanding that a free 27 yr old two-lane road be made 3 lanes for free? |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by johnie: 7:34pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
I am still waiting for anyone to tell us where the alternative road between 2nd round about and 4th/chevron rounabout is! |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by omoabike: 8:16pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
The issue is that the only motorable road to a community is going to be tolled without any alternative provided. That is what is wicked and unjust. I-10 (Katy Freeway), Westpark Toll Roads, Hardy Toll Road as well as Sam Houston Toll roads are roads within the Houston City that are toll roads. For the 2 years I have been living here now I have not used these roads as there are alternatives. The only people who use the toll roads are people who are in a hurry and "out of towners" Our leaders and elites tend to disregard the masses in decision making yet they want people not to rebel when they are riding roughshod over them. It is ethically wrong to force everybody to pay tolls because of where they live. As some people have mentioned earlier, maybe we should toll all the roads in Lagos. The right thing would have been for LCC to build a new road and toll it so people who want the fast lane to wherever they are going would patronize them. SHEBI THE BEAUTY OF CAPITALISM IS IN THE CHOICE IT PROVIDES. SO WHY DONT THE CAPITALISTS INVEST THEIR MONEY IN PROVIDING ALTERNATIVES TO WHAT THE JAKANDE SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT PROVIDED AND LET PEOPLE PATRONIZE THEM? WHY MUST THEY TAKE OVER A FORMER SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT ROAD AND PREACH TO US THAT SOCIALISM IS BAD.[/size] Rent seekers and "10 percenters" posing to be investors. "Yeye dey smell" To the man who said that Lagos- Ibadan and Benin-Shagamu Expressways do not have alternatives well maybe he did not know about the Old Lagos Road from Ibadan that goes through Ijebu-Ode and Ikorodu to Lagos. Maybe he did not know of the Ife Akure Owo Benin City Road. WHERE THERE IS NO JUSTICE THERE CAN NOT BE PEACE |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by naso2(m): 8:19pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
All our social crusaders are pretending not to see. Why nobody has deemed it fit to get proper interpretation of this action in a competent court still baffles me. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by naijatoday: 8:25pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
The toll is stupid because all the have done is add one lane My thing is why are this people just protesting now. When Tinubu signed the contract they were all cheesing Any why the hell is everyone blaming fashola is he the one that signed the contract? |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by Kobojunkie: 8:28pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
naijatoday: Does it really matter much to the people that a different person from the one that signed the contract is in office now? The point is this toll is now their reality and they are saying no way. Government(whomever it is now to rep them) ought to listen and do something for these tax payers. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by omoabike: 8:30pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
naijatoday:If you have been following the media reports on this issue, you will know that the people have been complaining from day 1 and what they were promised was that there would be an alternative road which has not yet materialize hence their protest. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by naso2(m): 8:35pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
omoabike: My own point even is that , the tolling should be for the alternative road. Government can not just come and add one lane to a free 2-lane road and begin tolling. That is irresponsibility. I now see the problems we face when we lack credible opposition. Nothing annoys more that the fact that other political parties in the state have turned voiceless. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by naijatoday: 8:38pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
Kobojunkie: I made that statement based on some of the comments on this page and on Next's website I agree that is the govt that should help in finding the solution. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by naijatoday: 8:41pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
omoabike: The people have know that there will be no alternative project since the beginning of last year when LCC said the alternative road was not their responsibility. i guess better late than never |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by PapaBrowne(m): 9:01pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
omoabike: You made some sense here sha. But I think you need to think beyond this Lekki road. This Lekki road is the first real PPP in infrastructure development in Nigeria. If it fails, investors are not going to put money into PPPs in Nigeria. If they don't then we can say bye bye to our dreams of excellent infrastructure. Oil money would never build adequate infrastructure. There is so much money in private hands that can be used to build infrastructure, and we must encourage that money to come our way. It is sad that Nigerians have a mentality that money to build roads would just appear from the sky. Nigeria cannot afford good infrastructure and at the same time pay salaries and provide adequate healthcare and qualitative education. People have to pay for some of the services so the government can expend more money on areas where the people cannot afford. Lekki residents buy houses and pay rents at prices that would send shivers down your spine. They should be the last people to complain about tolled roads. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by Kobojunkie: 9:10pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
naijatoday: I mean you have to consider this as you would something that directly affects you. Most all toll roads, even turnpikes come as alternatives to already existing roads that lead the same way. Is it really fair to have some taxpayers with no other option but to pay more for what others are getting simply by paying the same taxes? What exactly is development in this case that these need to pay so much more than taxes for? naijatoday: But I believe the protest is for government to do something about the situation. According to @na_so, the road is the old road that has been there for over 27years, only that a new lane was added but now the road is tolled by LCC. So, it definitely makes sense for the people to wonder what the heck the government is doing turning their road into a toll road without providing them an alternative. I don't see anysense in claiming that because some of these tax payers are rich, it is ok to milk them for as much as we can. I mean they already pay their taxes. Since when did it become a crime to be rich? What about the poor people who still live in the area? Are they to suffer too in the need of some to get at the few rich? |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by omoabike: 9:29pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
PapaBrowne:You see the issue is not about Lekki or the people who stay there. I have issue with us assuming that since something does not affect us directly then it is okay. See if I were to move back to Naija which is going to be soon, I will not live in Lekki and while in Naija I never liked the area. But the morality of this issue is what is in contention. In a democracy, people should be allowed to have freedom of choice and they should be protected from the OPPRESSION of the majority. Yes I agree with you that money to take care of infrastructures has to come from somewhere, but before you tell the people to sacrifice shouldn’t the government try to curb wastage in its own spending first? If we are so crazy about this PPP as the solutions to our infrastructural deficit, then we should do it the right way. PPP is not done anywhere else like we are trying to do it in Nigeria. If we are interested in PPP as the solution then I propose that we do not have any government then. We should not pay tax again. Let the “voodoo investors” and the “beer parlor Capitalists” constructs the roads and we then pay toll charges to them. Let them manage the schools and hospitals and we only pay for services they render and not the middle man which is government. What the people protesting are asking for is for them to have choices. THIS I BELIEVE IS WHAT CAPITALISM IS ABOUT. CHOICES! So why should it be that the only road to the area is the one that is going to be tolled? |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by PapaBrowne(m): 9:51pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
^^^^^^ Oh! The people surely have choices. They could take the bus. Or they could move to the mainland. Or take a walk.Or even use the beach. These are choices albeit less conmfortable choices. I have a friend who thinks it is too much too pay 1000 naira a night for hospital admission, but would gladly cough out 12k per night for hotel accommodation. It is an absurd thinking pattern and it is very common with Nigerians and that is my grouse. We must begin to learn how to pay for things. Lekki residents buy land at an average of 40 million per plot. If you ask them to contribute just 1 milliion to develop infrastructure on their street which they would enjoy, you will hear them complaining. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by Remii(m): 9:51pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
ACN should really manage this issue very well, the tax in Lagos state is the most aggressive in Nigeria with people paying as much as 20% of their earnings to Lagos state, even when their kids don't go to govt school, not govt power, not govt water or hospital. If the road is built solely from private revenue, then what happened to all tenement rates, taxes and other charges paid by Lekki Ajah residents to LASG. Rival political party could promise otherwise and get some sympathy. Oyinlola did the same to Akande in Osun State while he promised to reabsorb all laid off workers, even though Akande had a good reason to do that. The workers naturally voted Akande out. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by Remii(m): 10:09pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
PapaBrowne: FYI, there are charges like Infrastructure Development levy (IDC) Title perferction and VAT charges paid to LASG all these amounting to about 15% of value of property and there is yearly tenement rate also. Those who bought 1004 flats paid N1.2m per flat to LASG as IDC alone. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by FACE(m): 10:50pm On Aug 19, 2010 |
PapaBrowne: You only put toll gates on brand new roads and bridges. If for any reason, you have to expand and toll an existing road, then you must provide an alternative route and consult with the people and get their opinion on the expansion and tolling of the existing road. No one expects to get all things for free, but no one wants to be exploited either. You said that if people could not afford the charge, that they should move to the other side of town. How laughable and childish. You want people who were rightly given a good access to other parts of the state for free about 27 years ago to now move to another part of town, just because other people arrived the area and paid infrastructure dev. taxes to someone (govt) who decided to blockade everybody including the original residents unless they paid toll fees each time they used the road ? Clap for yourself ! You referred to UK and mentioned health insurance. You do not need a health insurance in order to access NHS services as long as you have a right to be in the UK, including foreign students. Health insurance is by choice . In the congestion charge zone in London, not all roads are chargeable, as there are congestion charge free routes within the zone. |

I am BIG fan of Fashola and Ojuyobo but on this Lekki Expressway, no way. Two toll gates only on that road? Please can someone tell us how many kilometre we have on Lagos-Ibadan expressway? 30 years conssession? God please have mercy. ![]() ![]() |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by AjanleKoko: 11:56am On Aug 20, 2010 |
My opinion: I'll go with the people on this one. Development is laudable, but government needs to bridge the gap, and carry the people along. Right now, they're carrying on as if it was a fait accompli. Let the government meet with associations of property owners in that district, as well as the indigenous settlers. The impression now is that Tinubu has all the Obas on that axis in his pocket. It's very difficult to believe there's no ulterior motive. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by mustafar1: 12:54pm On Aug 20, 2010 |
the toll is coming 27yrs late. the toll plaza built on that road initailly should have been used for what it was built for. once lekki-epe road is done, we'll move to tolling as many bridges in lagos as possible. third mainland, eko bridge, we'll build one to apapa and toll it, we'll build one to ikorodu and toll it. we'll be tolling lagos badagry express by the way too, we are already looking into how we'll toll lagos abeokuta expressway. the only road that might be safe is ikorodu road but i cant guarantee it wont get tolled. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by SanFranc(m): 1:20pm On Aug 20, 2010 |
As usual, we can't fight the man with the weapon. Its too late to fight Fashola or Tinubu on this issue, the only request we have is for them to make the toll affordable. The N100 - N250 per trip speculation is way too high. If the fee is affordable, we'll get used to it before long especially if our travel time is considerably reduced. Fashola should also try and complete the Lekki -Ikoyi bridge as well the Famolo bridge extention in order to reduce the horrible traffic between 1004 flats and Falomo bridge. |
Re: Protesters Block Lekki Expressway by joeyfire(m): 2:42pm On Aug 20, 2010 |
I ran into the protesters that morning and got to work late but it was alright. The Toll idea is a CON ! no matter what all these cheerleader pro-PPP apostles scream out. You cant enter into secret deals and decide to put already heavily taxed people at the mercy of a profiteering concessionaire just like that without a choice of saying no. For crying out loud what use is all the tax money if everything is given up to private developers and entrepreneurs. Fela called democracy - ''demonstration of craze'' and we all thought HE was insane. |
