If people would use the now famous Portuguese slogan used by activists, labour unions and everyone associated with any kind of struggle, it is good they know how it is correctly written. The slogan, a symbol of Mozambican political struggle is correctly written as "A luta continua, vitória é certa". It is wrong to write it as "Aluta continua, victoria ascerta". For where? The "A" is the definite article equivalent of English "the" and there is nothing like "Aluta" in Portuguese language. The "luta" itself is the "struggle". The "é" means "is" and conjugated from the verb, "ser" (to be). "Continua" is an inflection of the verb, "continuar" while "certa" meaning "sure" or "certain" is the feminine form of the adjective "certo". The history that brought this into our lexicon and struggle-speak is still as recent as the 70's. All you SUG people who bandy intellectualism should correct this. I know it is not a language they speak but if they must put something into mainstream use, they could as well learn to use it correctly. Boa sorte! |
