Signs that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will take its more than three-month-old industrial action arrived on Thursday, February 7, with the report that the association reached an agreement with the federal government.

The agreement was signed by the ASUU leadership and the federal government following a series of meetings.

The lecturers, however, promised that they would resume strike if the government only reached the Memorandum of Action (MoA).

The trade union, according to TVC, warned the vice-chancellors against “action of impunity, nepotism antithetical for university culture.”

Legit.ng reported that on Tuesday, February 5, the association had conducted a nationwide referendum following the inability of stakeholders in the education sector to resolve the strike initiated by ASUU.

The referendum has learned to decide whether to suspend or continue industrial action that has been damaged in the country’s universities for three months until the federal government meets the demands of the lecturers.

The referendum was organized by the national leadership of the union which directed its co-ordinators to meet with their respective chairmen on the action.

It has also been reported that the federal government has made a decisive effort to solve problems that started ASUU’s long-term strike, released N16.8 billion to settle outstanding salaries of lecturers in universities.

Education Minister Malam Adamu Adamu revealed it at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, February 2, adding that the fund would be released by the Office of the Federation’s General Accountant (AGF).

However, the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) hampered the election as the ongoing strike attacked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the Academic Personnel Union of Policy Technology (ASUP) is not resolved.

According to the students, the three-month-old strike, apart from preventing their academic activities, will also dismiss some 22.3 million of them.

The students have claimed that many of them registered at the closest INEC offices and are currently in their respective homes because of the ongoing strike.

“The ongoing strike by both ASUU and ASUP has not only brought more pain to students and their parents, it is now seen by us as a deliberate attempt to decipher our members, especially those registered in their school environments and currently in their various homes, ” Danielson Bamidele Akpan, chairman of NANS, said.
