As livestock business owners or intending livestock business owners, we are more fixated on the money we can make from our various livestock enterprise, we pay little or no attention to the health risk that may jeopardize the whole operation, no common sense approach, no proper planing on maintaining and improving the health status of their animals.

A lot of business owners have lost their business due to an outbreak of a disease among their flocks that could have been prevented, over 10 million livestock animals in excess of over 1 billion Naira are lost due to one disease or another annually, so the burning question is how not become a victim and this can be prevented or mitigated through a common sense approach to Bio security.

Bio security practices on livestock farms and ranches include sanitation, animal management, feed management, facility maintenance, manure handling, and disposal of dead animals.

Common Sense approach to Bio security ( The Dos and Don'ts)

1. Always consult with a veterinary Doctor. I personally am a victim of this, my little knowledge of animal health and physiology in my final year and due to my success in the course gave me a fake confidence that i don't need a veterinary doctor to draft out a bio security and vaccine plan of my animals. Colossal failure is the summary of my folly then.

2. keep your Distance: Your livestock houses/pens should have restricted access and only when its necessary can you allow people enter and they must have clean footwear and clothes, shower in and out facilities are necessary too, a dip is very important.

3. Keep it clean: you, your staff should follow bio security procedures for cleanliness, all equipment's, tools, boot, clothes, vehicles, pen must be kept clean and disinfected at all times.
