The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger said on Friday that elections for senatorial posts in East Niger and North Niger may not be held on Saturday because ballots from the area were missing.

NAN reports that Prof. Samuel Egwu, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, made the statement while interacting with journalists in Minna.

"The problem has been reported to the INEC headquarters in Abuja for urgent attention.

"Officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria who were charged with the responsibility of securing materials sensitive to the material went to Abuja for the last batch of sensitive material for Saturday's elections in the state, for which we are waiting," he said.

Egwu said that 85 percent of the facilities needed to conduct free elections and fares in the state had received non-confidential material and had been moved to various destinations in the state's 25 state governments.

He said the commission trained 23,000 ad hoc employees for elections in the state.
