More trouble for couple over househelp’s death
… As another maid collapses, at police station

A Lagos couple who allegedly tortured one of their househelps to death, are now living in fears, as another one, who is said to be in critical condition collapsed at the weekend.

The Elochukwus (other names withheld) are being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Panti, Yaba, Lagos, for allegedly killing the victim, Sunny Oriaku.

Their two househelps who were alleged to be in chains, were also rescued by the police. Daily Sun gathered that Emmanuel collapsed at the weekend. The couple, who thought the boy would give up the ghost, blamed each other for their travails. The man, who earlier denied torturing the deceased, later contradicted himself when he saw Emmanuel being revived by some police detectives interrogating them.

Elochukwu explained that he had been warning his wife not to maltreat her house- helps, but to treat them as their own children. “See what she has caused me now. When I was telling her to treat the children like ours, she did not listen to me. If this boy dies now, it is double wahala for us,” he lamented.

The 38-year-old man, from Anambra State said: “On several occasions, I saw the househelps being starved as punishment. I usually cautioned my wife and went to the kitchen to prepare food for them. God knows that I was handicapped in this matter, as I was not always at home.” His wife, who seemed to be unrepentant, warned him to be a man as statements by Emmanuel and Ebuka had already indicted them as having tortured Oriaku to death.

“Dear, all these confessions and allegations you are leveling against me are belated. Have you forgotten that two of us are being held over the death of Oriaku? So, stop being funny and face the challenge as a man.”
“As far as this matter is concerned, I am innocent. My husband is even innocent but I am surprised that he is blaming me for the sin I did not commit,” she said.

On whether she had the habit of beating up the deceased, she said: “There is an adage which says, “spare the rod and spoil the child”. I beat my househelps as I would to my children. Are they not under my care,” she queried. Ebuka had earlier given account of how 14-year-old Oriaku was chained in the toilet for over four days, an act which resulted in his death. He disclosed that Oriaku died without tasting any food. “As he was dying, he begged for food but our madam told him to die. She said if he died, she would compensate the family by paying a token of N200,000.”

“We were three househelps. We were suffering the same fate but Oriaku was unlucky. Madam had the habit of starving us for many days. She chained us in the toilet for many days.” He disclosed that on the day Oriaku died, his madam had accused Emmanuel of stealing fish from the pot of soup, but later found out that it was Oriaku who stole it. “As I am sitting before you, I may die soon. I had been in chains for five days alongside Oriaku,” Emmanuel said.

He narrated how they were denied food and water for days, which made them to drink their urine. The couple had allegedly subjected them to serious torture which he said, made him to report the matter at the Okota police station. “The police asked them to sign an undertaking that they would not torture us again, but few days after, they started torturing us again,” he said.

The Lagos State police spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba, said the couple would be charged to court after investigation.

Wonders shall never end! Well, it's not their fault, the fault lies with the parents of those kids who are unable to cater and care for their own children. As for me, i'll rather give birth to one kid and train him/her instead of producing bunch of kids and not having the capacity to train them!

I don't think it has to do with Igbos or any other tribe.
It is an individual or personal thing. Some people are just too wicked abeg.

Sometimes parents die early and our society has no structure on ground for taking care of the children of such parents. If you leave a lot of wealth through you will,and the children are still very young,close relatives may still take over everything you labored for.

It is a structural problem.However, truly the couple is WICKED.

It doesn't really work that way once you have acquired a servant/slave mentality. Remember just a few Britons enslaved and remotely managed our fore-fathers even on our own soil.It took centuries to break loose.

How can you 'chain' someone to death?

In some instances they don't even pay, just feeding them half rations.  People like Ikengawo parents behave like this and blame the parents of the poor kids for not working hard enough, while they loot all the public money and send their mo.ron kids abroad to go and party.

Vengeance  is mine I will re-pay, says the Most High God!!!

The heart of man, , if it was her child that stole a piece of meat or fish from the pot of soup , would she act  in the same manner, why can't we love others like our selves or even our own, wicked world!

Haba! Y "the couple"? Imagine some one out there to chain your child, even with feeding while on chain! That is wickedness of the highest order. Outright murder.

And this is what some people who live in Nigeria call enjoyment: you have a bunch of maids and helps who you treat worse than slaves . . some of these may even be family members!

And then you blame the white man for buying slaves.

OK let's be straight here. Before anyone tries to castigate my opinion or call me names, i am a bonafide Igbo son, born and raised in Igboland.
That being said, let my fellow Igbos here not pretend like this issue is not one that has been plaguing Igbos for a long time.
Growing up in Enugu, all the so called ''agbenu'' people (people from Anambra State) were notorious for having several maids that they treat like mere dogs. I saw this while growing up and still saw it before leaving Nigeria. These wicked demons called ''madams and oga'' treat these poor kids like trash. Some even go to the extent of pouring hot boiling water on these poor house-helps or using hot burnt rod on them, things you wouldn't even do to animals. They do all these while courting their own kids as living treasures.

I was raised poor but even while not having much, my parents, being really educated, swore never to let any of their kids be sent away to such slavery. These demons even have the audacity sometimes to approach my parents asking for one of my siblings as maid (can you imagine) while their own kids are there, bunch of lazy b.a.s.t.a.r.d.s.

I am seriously not surprised that the couple involved are from Anambra states. These people, over the years have had that disgusting impression that they are the achievers of Igboland and other Igbos should see them as their lords. Even the poorest and dirtiest looking ones among them would look at people from say Enugu or Ebonyi and demean them, calling them primitive. That is why you see these godforsaken demons of madams and ogas prowling the villages of Enugu and other Igbo states looking for slaves to cart away. But times have changed.

Anambra should put their house in order. Most ills and vices in the east are from there. These guys are grossly illiterate and their wives are just lazy Zap.s. who can't do jack but surround themselves with maids they torture to hell.

It's about time this issue comes to light. I lived my whole live in Enugu, listening to the cries and wailings of housegirls and boys being brutalized every night while the people turn a blind eye. Enough is enough

That being said, i can rightly say that these devil incarnates that deprived this kid of life should burn in hell for all i care.
