Ahead of the 2019 elections, Geoffrey Onyeama, minister of foreign affairs, has urged the international community to respect Nigeria's sovereignty

Onyeama said that Nigeria, being a sovereign nation, would not allow herself to be dictated toThe minister added that the international community would do better if it remained impartial and did not give the impression that it had a preferred candidate in the election

Minister of foreign affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has urged the international community to respect the sovereignty of Nigeria and allow her solve internal challenges without interference.

Onyeama said this while addressing a cross section of the heads of diplomatic missions and international election monitoring groups in Nigeria on the conduct of the 2019 General Elections, NAN reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the gathering, organised by the ministry in conjunction with the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), aims at engaging with friends and partners of Nigeria on the conduct of the re-scheduled elections.

Onyeama stressed that Nigeria welcomed partnership and support from the international community. He, however, said that the country, being a sovereign nation, would not allow herself to be dictated to, since it would not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.

“We welcome very much your engagement, we appreciate your support. We acknowledge how important your engagement for us in 2015 helped us to deliver probably one of the most free and credible elections we have had in this country for a very long time.

“However, we have cause to be concerned with the way the engagement has been communicated, because at the end of the day, we are a sovereign country.

“The line should not be crossed from exalting us and wanting this to succeed and really be a democratic process; to dictating to us and getting to the nitty-gritty of how we run the country.

“We have heard all kinds of conspiracy theories; that is why we deem it necessary to hold this kind of interaction with you. I had cause to meet with some of you to discuss the general narrative.

“As members of the diplomatic community and international election observers, we welcome very much, your engagement," he said.

Onyeama said that the international community would do better if it remained impartial and did not give the impression that it had a preferred candidate in the election.

This development follows a previous report by Legit.ng that the governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai, said any “foreign power” that tries to intervene in the forthcoming general elections would go back to their country in body bags.

The governor also said the country will never be dominated by any foreign influence. He said: “Those that are calling for anyone to come and intervene in Nigeria, we are waiting for the person that would come and intervene, they would go back in body bags."

shocked These idiots never remembered:
-When they went cap-in-hand as a band of senseless opposition elements to beg the US to prevail on the then govt to conduct a credible election which though still flawed, they immensely benefiitted from?

-Same idiots received in audience the then Sec.of State John Kerry on a state visit to Northern Nigeria with utter disregard to a then sitting president because of his personal & national antagonism towards the LGBT & same sex marriage issue.

-A delegation of two Nigerien governors and hoardes of unspecified supporters entered & violate Nigeria's sovereignity & our electoral process by crossing our ever porous border into Kano to campaign for a failed president Buhari while he endorsed the babanriga dollar bribe stuffing scandal crook-Ganduje for a second term in office.Yet these idiots see no inference in that unpatriotic act.

- APC pro but then renegade PDP governors went on a jamboree in the US to whip up anti-PDP sentiments in their inordinate quest to attain power.

- APC members wrote the US & other world nations not to sell weapons to the then Jonathan govt citing human right abuses which they've done worst ever since.Even botching a legitimate operation for Nigeria to buy weapon from SA.

- Buhari have been on chronic health tourism in a cosy London hospital shamelessly seeking healthcare even against his govt policy.Meanwhile, the Country have also continued to solicit aids from all these nations it's now antagonizing.

-Same APC elements fractured the sovereignity of the Nigerian nation with their inflammatory speeches e.g.the Rotimi Amaechi's infamous "APC will form a parallel government" speech?

The hypocrisy of this senseless & uselessness hypocritical Buhari government is so nauseating.

it has been repeatedly confirmed from different oracles in Edo state to oshiomohle that buhari cannot win a free and Fair election. hence the panic. tinubu will be surprise what will happen in Lagos and Kano. all these have been revealed to them already and that's why they are afraid to conduct the election.

When Obama and his secretary of state interfered in Nigeria 2015 elections in favour of apc was Nigeria not a sovereign nation.

Apc is drowning and the international community will only be laughing at them.
